as I was doing a water change , I always stay by the tank as the syphon goes, I noticed one of my neons in the tube, went to stop the syphon , and realised the battery compartment is dodgy and wouldn't stop the motor, my neon tetra was shredded, i'm devastated, R.I.P little neon, now down to two neons, which aint good for either of them, would you guys suggest I add another 3 maybe? and that syphon is going in the bin!!!!!!!! I shall be jugging my water out from now,

Is there not any sort of shield on the siphon? Look into getting one that has something to keep fish from getting sucked in. Sorry you had to lose a fish.

Cover it with a nylon stocking. While the can protect fish it also stops you from picking some debris. It is a trade off.

theres no shield the hole aint huge but big enough for a neon to get stuck obviously, i've always took care for this not to happen but this one just got by without me noticing, maybe I turned my head for a second, so I feel i'm partly to blame, guess these awful mishaps are just part and parcel of fishkeeping, I vow to grow stronger minded and toughen up, lol, but find it so hard losing fish , thanks guys for your support :
