Water parameters

BlueRamChiclidLover22

Hi. I am going to set up a cherry shrimp tank when we move and I have been wondering about water parameters, specifically TDS and KH GH. I have read about KH and GH but it’s kinda confusing still. I was just watching flip aquatics latest video and they kept mentioning TDS and I have to clue what it is and why it matters. Could someone maybe explain simply and quickly because even though I like chemistry and science, the more science you spout about KH and GH and TDS the more confused I will get. Thanks!

Salem

GH- general hardness. The measure of magnesium and calcium dissolved in water

KH- carbonate hardness. The measure of carbonates and bicarbonates dissolved in water. Keeps pH stable.

TDS- total dissolved solids/salts. The measure of organic and inorganic solids dissolved in the water. Includes GH, KH, nitrites, nitrates, chlorine, etc.
