Hi
I am new to the tank world. We have a 3 foot tank that contain Mollies, guppies, platys and bristle nose. Two weeks ago we replaced the carbon in the filter plus we have had about 25 new fry. Since then the tank is milky. I did have an aerator that had turned black so we took it out, the tank cleared now it has gone milky again to the point you cannot see from one side to the other. Have tested ph, ammonia, nitrite, and kh and all levels are perfect.
What is happening and how do I fix it???? Please help !!!!

What are your exact parameters and what are you testing with? How many gallons is your tank and how many of each fish do you have? How long has your tank been set up?

Hello Hope...

Chemical medium does little for the tank other than lower water odors, you really don't need it. What will help clear the tank water is a good poly fiber media from companies like HBH and Acurel. Acurel's ammonia fiber padding is especially good for polishing the water by attracting and holding tiny particles that give tank water that hazy look. Large, frequent water changes will help too. Just be careful not to disturb the bottom material when doing them.

Welcome to fish lore! Sounds frustrating! It is common for new tanks to have a bacterial bloom. Strange, but there is no chance anyone put anything in it? Another poster had a child drop a ham & mayonnaise sandwich into her tank. Just figured I would ask. What type of substrate do you have that the bubbler got black?

HI Fish Keeper
Tank has been up and running since December last year.
Fish: 2 Platy, 3 Dalmation Molly, 6 Guppy, 6 Tetra, 2 Bristlenose, 6 gold dust. Plus about 30 new fry. As for gallons I'm not sure - Maybe 160 litres. 1/4 tank changes are around 4 x 10 Litre buckets.
We use API test kits.
I have read on a few pages the term "blooming". Is this perhaps what my tank is doing with the sudden increase of fry?

It has been milky for about 2 weeks. We do 1/4 change every Saturday

HI Mom2some
I am fairly certain that nothing has been put in there. I have teenagers who are just as frustrated as me lol. I think the aerator was perhaps faulty as when my son went to move it, the end fell off and upon closer inspection, it has rotted away where the pipe went in.

You sound pretty overstocked, bioload wise. I would definitely up your water changes to 50% weekly regardless.
I'm not sure about your aerator but it sounds like it should be replaced.

What are your parameters?

The ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. What exact readings are you getting and what do you test with?
