Water Hyacinth

Heyhey, does anybody have any experience with water hyacinth? I have a small indoor pond, and just picked some up. I'm currently rinsing it and acclimating it to my water before putting it in the pond.
Does anyone have any trial and horror stories?
Specifically, my local store's pond was questionable, and I'm wondering if it's beneficial or harmful to trim off old/dead roots?

Ive always just given a good rinse and added it to the pond. I did get some hitch-hiking cherry shrimp a few years ago, those were interesting. My latest batch dropped all their roots during shipping, but came right back and bloomed. I keep trying to overwinter some indoors, haven't had any luck yet though.

Thanks. I did trim some roots, after a short quarantine period, and put one in the indoor goldfish pond. I'm thinking of breaking the remaining one up, and putting a bit in each of the small betta ponds. Any adverse effects to fish or bettas, specifically?

Ive only ever had it in with the goldfish, and they will on occasion much on the roots.

Well, I've got some in each pond now. The bettas love the roots- perfect napping spots.
