I'm suspecting if the bacteria in the Fluval bacteria product actually was short-lived and died off before it could produce nitrites.

Ya, it was a useless product. I'm going to return it.

So, should I hold off for the pwc until I get the stability?

I just skimmed through the posts, and I don't believe that this was mentioned (it may well have been, I've been away for a couple of weeks doing hard time at the cottage: pounding rock for a septic system, a chore my wife felt was mindless enough to suit my talents to a T ).
I am referring to using old media to start a cycle (assuming that it comes from a tank that you know to be clean).
Works like a charm, and immediately, as well. Happy to meet you, rick

Yea hold off on pwc and keep dosing Prime every 24 hours till Stability gets there.

I checked up on the delivery of stability and it hasn't even shipped out yet so I contacted them and they said that even though I used an express shipment speed, it will still take between 3-5 weeks JUST to ship out and then it will only take 2-3 days with shipping! So stability it out since it will probably be already cycled or close to being cycled by the time I finally receive it. I guess I'm cycling the old fashion way.

How high should my ammonia levels be that's still safe for a fish-in cycle before I do the pwc.

Where did you order the Stability from? Was it Amazon? They're usually good about delivering within a week... I think they sell it at Petsmart, is there one near your house? You should do a water change when ammonia gets 0.50 or higher.

Amazon.ca

But Amazon canada is really awful compared to the American site.

The petsmarts in Canada, at least in my area, doesn't carry it.

I canceled the order and found another place that sells it which is not express shipping but for a little extra money for shipping and handling it will ship by tomorrow sometime and get here by the end of the week/early next week.

No LFS in your area that carries Stability? That's pretty odd, it's a pretty popular product.

There is Oliver's pets but they don't sell it either. The only other fish store closest to me is about 35 minutes away. I'm not sure if they carry it. I should call them. I have tomorrow off...

Edit: they have it I don't know why I didn't think of them before. Thanks Dom90 for putting up his my insanity! I appreciate it, lol.

Okay update:

This is the second day dosing stability. And the ammonia is higher at .5 ppm

Nitrites 0

And nitrates 5.0 ppm

Should I do a pwc while on stability?

I'd just put a dose of Prime to protect the fish

I'm not using prime. Before I knew about all about the better products I just followed the ppl at pet smart which said to buy stress coat and it doesn't reduce ammonia. :/

I did 20-25% pwc yesterday and my ammonia levels haven't really come down. It's still at .5 ppm. Is that normal after a water change?

It may be a false positive on the ammonia test then.

Ok so it's not a false positive. Still reading .50 ppm ammonia 24 hours later but now there are .25 nitrites present! Finally!

Should I do an extra dose of stability? I don't want to do another pwc and get rid of those nitrites I worked so hard for.

Yea I would just do an extra dose of stability, it wouldnt hurt. Your cycle is going in the right track if you are starting to see nitrites.
