Waste piling up under filter output

Hi all,

Recently I've been getting a lot of waste gathering in the bottom right of my tank under my canister filter output. I do weekly water changes and vacuum the waste out, but I'd much rather the waste were picked up by the filter intake.

I have a 75 gallon tank with a new fluval 407 canister filter. Intake is in far left of tank and output is on far right.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

You could try adjusting the flow output nozzle to change the current direction, or lower the strength, it may take some experimenting, I have 2 Fluval canisters, after much wasted money on other filters, I bought these and will never go back. Good luck !!

My opinion the filter isn't for the heavy waste, it's for fine stuff and best to keep the heavy junk out of the filter and take it out with an aquarium vacuum. Clean the tank often or clean the filter often, your choice of course.

I would say if it builds up in a certain area, that area is where the slackest water movement is. The water moves and pushes the waste around eventually it gets sucked into the filter, and if it hits a spot and stops and all collects there, that's a sign that the water moves much less in that area.

Probably moving your intake to the center will cause enough pull from both left and right to get this waste to draw to it from both sides of the aquarium.

I always put my outlet and inlet on the same end of the tank. This causes the current that is returning to the outlet to carry the waste.

Water from outlet moves across the top, down the far-end panel and back across the bottom to the outlet.

redman77 , your situation seems normal, a 4ft tank w/ one filter will probably see a collection of waste at one end.

Consider getting a circulation pump and a cheap mechanical timer. Run the pump during the day and off at nite. You will have to experiment on where to place it and where to aim it, with the goal of creating enough current to blow the waste off the bottom and allow the intake to suck it up.

Amazon has tons if them for under $25.
