Warning: All Giant Gourami Owners Beware.

So, Can someone start by telling me why we don't have an option for Giant Gouramis? I thought I'd place this in the oddball fish section but it is still a gourami right? So Today my parents took me to this restaurant who is super famous for its seafood, if you guys don't know, the Giant Gourami is a delicacy here in Indonesia it is very popular to be used in Indonesian Dishes. Most GG owners would think "What the Heck! Your eating our pets!" well that's true. Surprisingly, Fried Giant Gourami is delicious and that's why all seafood restaurants here serve them, not only is it a unique type of dish but it's delicious as well.
If you guys feel disgusted I understand, because whenever I eat fried Giant Gourami I picture myself eating a thousand Pearl Gouramis and that's not a good feeling if you visit your LFS every week.
P.S. I did not mean to offend anyone, I'm sorry if I did

I have seen 3 spot and moonlight gouramis pickled, and the quick growing, eat everything it's offered kissing gourami is actually mass produced as a food fish.
With giant gouramis and kissers, the question is not why they are eaten, but why fast growing fish that if they are not eaten need huge space are sold in the regular trade. They should be special order fish for the few equipped to keep them.
A few of our popular fish were discovered for the hobby on dinner plates. Almost all the larger Cichlids are eaten somewhere, though they are usually considered too rich in bones. A friend ate Discus in Brazil (not delicious, apparently).

Agreed. Just like how Tilapia was introduced to fijI as a food source. I also have a friend who ate snakehead breast in Thailand, I guess we all have our own cultures.

Wow, that's a massive tank. I like the looks of the black giant gourami looks cool in my eyes. Unfortunately, here in Indonesia the only Giant Gourami tanks we see here are 20 gallon tanks filled with them, waiting to be fried and eaten.

Yes it was a huge tank, 360 degree cylinder. It had the giant gourami, the black one, tin foil barbs, clown loaches, and some kind of turtle. There are more pictures on my album of the Cleveland Aquarium if you are interested.

Sure am! I hope the turtle is a pig nosed turtle and by the way thanks for sharing!

I would love to have a giant gourami, but I couldn't dream of having a tank large enough to house one. Funny thing is, my LFS has one and he's such a jerk to all the humans lol. Every time I put my finger on the glass he snaps viciously at it.

But yeah, people eat dogs and horses and other cute animals in other places, so I'm not really offended. It may be gross and sickening for me, but I understand that you do what you do. Pigs are cute too and we eat those anyways.

My LFS has Giant Gouramis too but they don't care about humans they just either swim around or just stay there.
Good to hear that you understand, I expected most people to freak out, at leash the Giant Gourami owners.

I'm not surprised at this. Different countries do different things. I'm sure almost all fish are edible to someone. But I would not eat one.

I don't see what's the difference between eating a GG and something like a bass or walleye besides taste lol. Actually, there's this guy on YouTube named My Aquatic Diary and he has a 60,000 gallon pond. He had a few GG and now the population grew soo much he had to eat some off to reduce the population in his pond

Well some fish are raised for eating and some are meant for aquariums. I could not fathom eating something like a betta or molly for that matter.

I saw an article on how to cook a goldfish and how safe they are to eat.
Yikes. I guess some people get "creative" with their seafood.

EDIT: Here's the link!
Can You Eat A Goldfish? - Food Republic
And here's another peek at a rather strange, but funny, YouTube video!

I personally don't have an issue with people eating fish that are sold in the aquarium hobby. It's like saying you can't keep sunfish in a pond/large fish tank simply because they are a food fish. IMO

Red tail giant gourami is one of my dream fish to keep. Love the personality on those guys

Funny story, just had an asian couple buy our home and when they were viewing our home the dad saw my tank with dojo loaches in it and laughed that I was keeping "food fish" as pets.
