I want to make a koi pond with one of those plastic inground ponds, but i know nothing about ponds but im sure its not to different from keeping a aquarium. Some of my questions are can I use the dirt from digging a hole for pond as a substrate for plants. Also does the water still have to go through the nitrogen cycle, and is ph a concern. And what kind of plants are good for outdoors and good for koi.

I have a 2000gallon pond I dug out last year. Im not sure the dirt will be a good idea but I’ve never done it so someone will have to answer that. You still need to cycle your pond in my opinion. As for plants floating plants are great to cut back on aglae if your pond will be in the sun. Lily pads grow fast so I would suggest one if you want one..also a lot of bunch plants have done well in my pond
