Wal-mart Upgrading Fish Dept.???

My local wal-mart recently remodeled

They marked all their fish and plants down to 1$ and lower

I personally scored three huge plants, four serpae tetras, and a syndontis catfish for six bucks. ;D

I thought they were getting rid of their fish dept., but it seemed they were only moving it to a new set of tanks in the back of they store.

Funny thing is there were about 20 oscars, 30 mbuna, and 50 algae eaters, which all seemed to disappear in about three days.

Went in there the other day and they had plecos for a quarter.

Interested to see what they are going to do with the new tanks, (and the old ones, maybe I can make a deal ;D jk) not to mention surprised they kept their fish dept.

Wow! That's a great price... I hope all those oscars, mbuna, and algae eaters didn't go to a bad home. With such a cheap price, hopefully people didn't shove 2 oscars in a 10 gallon tank something like that.

The Walmart in my area is doing the same too! I refused to buy anything from that section.. I saw 6 out of 9 Oscars dead.. and the all the tanks had at least 3 fish dead.. with the live ones eating the dead ones.

Was in a wal-mart the other day and thought they were closing the live fish. The tanks were all empty and there was a sign on them "clearance all fish". The store isn't that old and no evidence of construction so I'm hoping it's the end of there tanks instead of moving them.

They finally unwrapped and installed the new fish tanks they look to have fake gravel and are smaller.

Notice the cliche pic at the top of the display

I don't know who even goes there to buy fish even the fish newbies I know who just started keeping fish wouldn't go to wal-mart for them.

Our Wal-Mart recently renovated and have the same display. We have to go into the pet section on a weekly basis for dog food and it's a struggle not to rescue some of these guys.

*looks at the floor, shuffles feet, and timidly raises hand* Um, me. My mom does her shopping at Wal-Mart, and it's a whole lot easier for me to just buy fish there than to have them drive me to a pet store, even though Wal-Mart does take worse care (in some cases) of their fish than pet stores.

I buy my fish there all the time.. *hangs head* We don't have a LFS and the pet store I used to get fish at really doesn't know what they are doing and most of their fish are mislabeled, a tank of silver tips had at least 4 other kinds of fish in it and the people taking the fish out didn't know what kind they were... the tanks are always dismally decorated and once I went 3 days in a row and saw the same dead fish. At least the tanks at our Walmart are bright, clean and the fish look good.

Walmart Employees

Not meaning to dis anyone but most Wal-Mart employees are not known to be fish people. (Kind of like going into a clothing store to get advice on how to fix your car, I don’t recommend it.) Next time your in Wal-Mart just ask the employee who is helping you how much experience they have. Most of your replies will be “Oh I work in the fabric department and don’t know a thing about fish” or “I am a new employee and this is my first time in this department.”

Wal-mart is a good cheep place to get supplies like: pumps, filters, heaters, plastic plants but I would never depend on the fish quality due to stress issues. Just how do they care for the fish in the tanks and sit back and watch the public around the tanks. Employees never wash before handling the nets or bags, and little Johnny is always tapping on the tank to see the fish move.

Now I may be just to dang picky about were I get my fish from but it is nice to know that the place I purchase my fish from knows something about the hobby and are attempting to care for them properly. Most local pet stores have a higher quality (less stressed) fish for sale but there is always a cost for quality…….

Update

Went to walmart this weekend and they had fish in the display.

They have stopped carrying the oscars and cichlids and have started to carry more of the smaller fish like guppies and mollies and platys.

They have at least 2 vacation feeder blocks in each tank and if there are plecos in them there are at least 5 algae wafers stacked at the bottom of the tank.

Non of the walmarts in our area sell fish anymore. One has tanks and food and a few filters and such, but it looks like the killing has stopped.

On the down side, we have a petco and a petsmart and that's about it for fish locations. The petco has a decent fish manager, but I think shes overworked and can't possible keep on top of the 70+ tanks and running a register. The petsmart looks very clean but haven't seen a fish person there in 3 visits to even ask where the testers were. Sooo... aside from a saltwater specialty store maybe we are SOL on LFS's....

Hey! Don't be ashamed. You buying a couple of fish there won't convince wal-mart to keep selling something they're ultimately losing money on. I think most of use have been horrified by the condition they keep the fish in. I once had an employee lose the fish he had in the net and it went flipping across the floor. When I asked him for a different fish, I got the eeeeeevil eye. Screw wal-mart and their fishy torture chambers.

Think of it this way: You saved some lives that day.
