Veil Angel Progress

Let me start by saying I’ve never had angels before but I did do some googling and I feel plenty capable to care for them. This will just be a thread to keep track of their progress.

I impulse-bought a single little marble veil angel and I love it to death. Right now it’s about quarter sized and living in a 29gal quarantine with some nano schools I bought the same day. I should be getting 2 more from the same seller, one black veil and another marble veil. I’m hoping to raise up a breeding pair in the future.

I never thought they were such inquinsitive fish, little fellow will follow my hand and look around calmly, much more docile than the African cichlids I usually work with.

I plan on moving them all to a 36gal bowfront after quarantine, I think they will do well in there until they’ve grown a bit more and hopefully form a pair. The odd man out will probably get sold or traded in, but this is several months away so I have time to plan things out better.

following .I have just started with Angels as well. I have had three for two weeks now. Two of mine are the size of a nickel and the third is almost the size of a dime....no idea what kind they are though. Enjoy!

I’ve had the 2 new ones for about a week now. They’re settled in and honestly my favorite is still the first little marble.

I have a black (marble?) veil, the biggest and most shy.

Then a gold veil(?). It’s fins are pretty ratty but healing alright.

At first I wasn’t too happy with them. They don’t have perfect fins like the marble guy and they are not very symmetrical. They’ve since grown on me and while they may not be the best looking angels they are still cute and personable. They tend to group together, so far I’ve seen no aggression among them.

Their tank mates, choprae danios and dwarf emerald rasboras, have been spawning. Not sure which species it was but I collected 3 fry while doing a water change. Just thought it was interesting and I’ll be raising them with my rainbow fry.

I bought another angel, it came right up to me and jumped in the net so I had to take it home. Not a veil angel but a standard koi(?). It’s smaller than the others but so far (2 weeks) it’s been doing good.

The black veil is still acting off, I noticed bad poo and hit the tank with prazipro a week ago. It eats but still secluded itself. Might hit the tank with general cure next.

Other residents who are going throw quarantine/holding/growout.

I’m getting the 36gal bowfront ready for them. Working on getting the plants going strong before I move them.

Angels are getting on alright. I’ve been going through treatment for internal protozoan parasites with medicated flakes. The black angel is the only one I worry about but it has perked up and started begging with the others. It still looks thin and does spit some of the food out but we’re getting there.

The little koi has caught up with the others in body size. This guy is a porker and really stuffs his gut when feeding.

Other than that not much to report. The original veil marble is getting some food aggression. No harm done yet but I think it will be the dominant fish when they mature.

Enjoying your updates...helps prepare me in dealing with my now 5 angels. Mine are from quarter size to loonie size. So far not much aggression here either.

Some important updates. The black veil died on me, still not too sure what issue it had. It was the biggest of them but with the eating picky eating it just didn’t grow properly. When it died it was the smallest, poor thing.

I was seeing a lot of aggression from the koi, it is now the largest in body size and the most beautiful. I moved them all to the 36gal that has a bunch of juvenile rainbows growing out. They’ve tried going after the rainbows but they’re too fast to catch. I would say the angels are about half dollar coin sized, the aggression has calmed down since moving them.

I am no expert when it comes to sexing angels but I feel the koi is a male. It’s the most aggressive and it looks like it has a little forehead bump. Little bugger is too fast to get decent pictures of though. Kinda hoping it pairs with the marble veil but we’ll see.

It’s been a VERY long time since the last update. To summarize, my juvenile rainbows started to disappear so I had to remove them. The gold veil angel got stuck in a piece of wood and died some months ago. The marble veil and koi have reached maturity and seemed to attempt to spawn about 2 months ago. After that I saw lots of pairing behavior, twitching, flaring and lip locking.
The koi became aggressive towards the marble veil and began to beat him up so I threw in a make shift divider, there is some fake plants and wood at the back end to block the 2in the divider did not cover. All the other fish can easily cross the barrier.

Tonight I am seeing them clean either side of the divider with breeding tubes out. The koi seems to be the female and the marble veil the male. The female seems to be doing practice runs up the spawning site and trying to push the divider over. There is also a piece of hornwart she’s been pushing back down whenever it floats up. Quite comical really :D

I thought about letting them be together but the male is still healing and I do not want to risk it. It should be possible for them to spawn successfully across the divider but even if they do I would think the rabbit snails, BN plecos and Siamese algae eater would eat them. We will see, there may be no eggs like last time I saw this behavior.
