Variatus behavior

I was wondering if the variatus platy is more of a timid, mellow breed? At home I have a male and female tuxedo variatus, and they seem to be shy most of the time. They are the only adults in the tank, the rest are a mix of variatus & swordtail fry. The adults are also somewhat scared of the fry... it's beyond weird.

The platy I have and breed (Gold Twinbar) are very outgoing. They're always investigating all areas of the tank and hold their own among the other tank residents (angelfish, gourami, swordtails etc) so I'm surprised that yours are so shy! Personality will differ from fish to fish though, so yours could just be just more reserved.

My forever pregnant gold twinbar platy. She is very gentle and isn't too shy

She looks ready to pop!
She popped out her second batch 2 weeks ago. A few different looking fry in the batch from her. 20 fry I got from her.
