Val's Bettas

Well I'm starting another thread I guess. Right now all I have is a cycled 5.5 gallon with black CaribSea Eco-Complete substrate, a heater and an HOB filter.

My plan is to have some shrimp and some killifish.

Since I don't have anything in the tank yet, what are some of your suggestions for plants and hardscape? I do have anubias and java fern that can go in it. And obviously I'll want to get some moss and other plants.

I'll probably do some type of moss for sure, I don't have any pictures since it's just a bare tank lol. I can take one when I get home though

I recommend some sußwassertang, maybe some pennywort. Anubias is always a good classic, and you could do some dwarf sag or corkscrew vals, maybe some water wistera

I'm never putting vals in my tank again. Never. I hate them. They always die. They're stupid.

I will look into the others though I have dwarf sag in my 29, I think that would look cool in the 5.5

I forgot to get pictures lol. Here it is. I literally just threw the plants in there with no plan so any ideas on where to place them, what other plants to get, etc would be great

Nice, are you adding pond snails? What type of moss are you adding?

Ha! Very funny AJE, if pond snails get in this tank I will blow it up I don’t know what type of moss, I don’t really like the moss balls so not those. I’m not sure how I want to incorporate the moss either, I plan on getting driftwood and maybe putting some on that

Someone tell me what to do with this stupid tank. I'm not doing shrimp anymore, I decided they're too expensive.

So that being said, how should I decorate and what should I put in it? I would really like something that goes all over the tank, not just a top dweller or bottom dweller. Unless I could do a top dweller and a bottom dweller.

lol well if it was mine it would be a snail breeder because that sounds like fun at the moment. Probably ramshorn since they're kinda neat.

Have you looked into the Scarlet Badis? I’m actually in the same exact stage as you rn asking the same question haha, was gonna do killifish shrimp and Pygmy corydoras myself

I actually have a little over a gallon set up with TONS of pond and ramshorns. I hate them. But I guess they're okay when they're confined in there. In my 29 though, I capture all that I can and still find at least 5 a day. Grrrrrrrr

I've seen the Scarlet Badis but I know they are kind of a more challenging fish. I thought about them. I also was going to do clown killies but they mainly stay on the top of the water. I wouldn't put any cories in less than a 20 gallon myself.

lol yeah I figured you had a good reason for not liking them. I saw the post above mine just had to suggest it anyway lol.

I also have a 1 gallon jar filled to the brI'm with them. They're super cool, and I think it might be cool to have a bigger setup, but I agree I'd be **** if they infiltrated one of my main tanks lol

The ultimate I think would be to have like an array of 5 gallon tanks and then use them to selectively breed ramshorns for color!

A couple full tank shots, I got some drift wood and moved the plants. I’m still not set on the placement of the plants but it will do for now.

And surprise! I went against all my stocking plans and got a betta lol. He’s obviously kind of tiny as you can see my rings (size 6) next to him.

I’m assuming the lines on the side of him are stress lines? Not completely sure though. He’s acclimating right now. I mainly got him because I have no idea how he’s going to look once he gets older and thought it’d be cool to see him develop!

Not sure what it is, but it kinda looks cool. It’s like a zigzag.

I really like the anubias and the setup in general! is it coffeefolia?

what a lil cutie. I like the iridescent fins. I think the black marks might be part of his grizzle colouration?

how about ghost, ghostie, checkers, etch, phantom, alastor?

Just a little update:

He (still doesn't have a name) has colored up SO MUCH. The back half of his body is black with the front still being white. His fins are a combination of black, blue and the outer portion is clearish, which I think may be fin regrowth.

I'll try to get a picture sometime soon, it's hard because of the tannins from the driftwood

Hahaha I can make it out. I've been slowly doing water changes every day because I have well water and the pH is a little off right now due to it raining so much. Hopefully I can get it clear enough to take a picture soon

Update: my unnamed betta got an upgrade. For $5 I got a 10 gallon tank and lid with a bucket of stuff that came with it. So now my little buddie has so much more room. Here are some horrible pictures but you can somewhat make out his coloring. He is honestly stunning in my opinion (may be biased though). He is NEVER still, it was ridiculously hard to even get these pictures. I still need name ideas if you have some lol.

Honestly give it a week or two! I have a Halfmoon Betta that when I purchased was mostly white, tiny bit of blue along the fins. Now in his current tank for almost 3 weeks he has become fully blue! His caudal fin is all blue but the very outter ring is this cream like color and I love the way he has transformed. Bettas without a doubt are some of my favorite fish.
