Vacation Filtration

I'm in college and I'm going home for Christmas break, which is 3 weeks long. Of course that's way too long to leave my fish tank alone, so I'm bringing my fish home to an already established 15 gallon that I've been having my dad keep up.
I'm worried that while I'm gone there won't be enough ammonia to keep my bacteria in the filter alive in the tank in my dorm. Would just throwing a small vacation feeding block in there work to keep the cycle alive? (Don't worry, I never actually use the vacation feeders. I just have some leftover from when we had fish when I was little)
The tank in my dorm is a 10 gallon with 6 neon tetras and a small mystery snail.

In theory that will work but you will need to clean the tank really well before you can put the fish back. Or you could just take your filter or media home to and put it on the bigger tank aling side the other filter.

Best approach would be to bring the filter media with you as mentioned above.

I have a 5 hour drive home, would the bacteria on the media survive that long in a bag of tank water?

It will most likely survive that long with an addition of fish food to increase ammonia levels. You may want to use the water from that specific tank. Good luck

5 hours is not a big deal and if you're keeping the media in with the fish, the bacteria wouldn't die off anyway.
