Hello Amartin14655! Great question! I'd say it greatly depends on the types of plants! If you have hardy plants that don't require much nutrients, I would say it wouldn't be necessary. However, if you have plants that require a bit more care and feed off of the stuff in the substrate (root-feeders), then I would say you should consider it! Honestly, if it were me, I'm not sure if I would add anything. I've been doing a project where I'm growing aquatic plants from seeds in a small cup in front of a window, using about 1" of Seachem Flourite Black, and they've been taking off! Barely any ferts have been added (I only added a drop or two at the beginning of setup). Hopefully this helps!
