using rocks

    can this rock be used safely in an aquarium.

    What type are they? Try the vinegar test on them. Pour some vinegar on, if they fizz then don't use them.

    If I recall, them fizzing is still fine if you're dealing with a hard water system like an African Cichlid tank. But if they don't fizz, they won't mess with your pH at all.

    Slate is fine for aquariums. I would wash them since they came from outdoors though.

    They use to make slate bottom aquariums. I wish I could find one..

    Definitely this. Washing the rock is an absolute must.

    i see the old aquariums with metal framing and slate bottoms on craigslist all the time. do i have to worry about the quartz doing anything to water conditions, or should i just avoid the ones with quartz

    I would play it safe and avoid using the quartz in the aquarium. I can't know for sure since I didn't do my research but I wouldn't take the chance since I am uneducated on that.

    I have quartz in my tank, it is fine. It doesn't raise pH either.
