Using Poly-fil In Hob Filters And Media Stacking Advice? And Canister Vs. Hob?

I've recently began experimenting with different media and stacking (layering) techniques in my tanks that have HOB filters. I know using poly-fil has been around for decades, but I just started using it.

I'm wondering if any of you have had experiences using it in your HOB filters and/or have any advice on what kind of media to layer or stack inside the HOB filter; as opposed to just using the pre-manufactured replaceable cartridges of activated carbon filled-pouches and whatnot.

And also... what's (better or) more preferred?

Whats better really depends on application and tank size. It also depends on aesthetics of the intake sticking in the tank. Personally I don't use either HOB or canisters anymore. I exclusively use sumps. Well ok except my qt that has what use to be a penguin 350.

I use Poret filter foam from Swiss Tropical's & Fluval bio ring's in my Marineland Penguin 350 filter's.

HOB's, canisters and sumps all have their place.

Their use usually depend on factors like available space, budget, tank size, bio load, and the hobbyist's skill level.

Skavatar gave good advice as always. The link he posted is directly related to your post about adding media to your filter.

I to use poly-fil but found threads being siphoned up into the filter and wrapping around the impeller blade shaft causing it to slow down or even stop

The batting version does a better job at retaining the fibers.

I use sponge pre-filters on my intake tubes, so any loose fiber doesn't get sucked in

Yes I use pre filter sponges as well Also adds additional surface area for beneficial bacteria and a great feeding area for nano shrimp
