Has anyone ever tried using black leveling sand in your fish tanks? It's cheap, black, and looks like "Naturals Moon Sand" but I'm curious if it's toxic or if I should just stay away from it? I've read about you all on here using play sand, but I can't say I've seen it in black. Any help for finding an inexpensive way to put black gravel in my tank would be appreciated.

Define cheap lol

I'm not sure how suitable black sand would be, it would depend on where it came from (e.g. a natural river bed, ocean sand, volcanic sand), or how it got black. i.e. if it has been dyed.

If it is from a natural river bed, then I imagine it should be ok, given a good thorough rinse

Here in Aus, my LFS has a variety of aquarium safe gravels that I consider cheap, so it's a matter of opinion on what you consider cheap.

50lbs bag for something like $15 at lowe's. I really don't know if it's natural our not it's what they use to put under paving stones to level up the ground. Best I can get regular gravel at the LFS is $40 for 50 lbs. Thanks for the reply.

You would need to be sure of it's exact composition first. My gut says that it wouldn't be safe but I've been wrong plenty of times before.
