Using Goldfish Bowls

So I was given two 'goldfish' bowls last weekend. I couldn't think of anything that I could use them for. I decided to scout through the web and see what some people have used goldfish bowls for. AkarI has allowed me to mock.....oops I mean use her pictures. Here is what she has done with her lovely goldfish bowls.

Used it as a temporary holding tank:

Fill it with scrumptious candy:

And fill it with hair ties:

Well I didn't really find any ideas extraordinarily appealed to me, no matter how tempting Akari's hair tie idea was. So I decided to do something really weird with mine.

Then I went to JC and picked up some African Violets for $4 total. A few pebbles, some dirt, a bit of 'African Violet soil', a plant, a little more dirt, and more pebble left me with Modern Art!

First thought: My bowls are famous! =D

Second thought: Hey! Don't be hatin' on my hair ties!

Your flowers are really nice! I love flowers, but I kill them..... But I left my bamboo in my dorm for a month, when I went home, and I came back, and it was still green! =D

Enclosures for small terrestrial inverts? Like a wolf spider? That's what I would do!

I'm quite creative with my bowls, I guess LOL I also use a "Lee's Double Betta Keeper" and a funnel to fill up gallon jugs with new water for water changes:

I got a "fish" bowl for Christmas one year. It was supposed to be "perfect for a goldfish or betta" - at least, that's what it said on the box.

So, I put a pothos in it and set it on the counter in our bathroom...

About 6 months later, it was still doing quite well.

I "adopted" some ADFs that came in one of those Hallmark store ADF jails. New gravel, an anubis nana, a bitty java fern, and one lonely ramshorn. I haven't taken a picture of it though.

I have a FB that I use as a hospital tank at my desk, allows me a good visual of the fish to keep an eye on symptoms. Thou I would like to change that out to another tank If I could get one of a nice size.

I got a gorgeous goldfish bowl at a yard sale and I only use it to make a layered pudding/coolwhip/ladyfingers dessert. It looks incredible and high-end in that bowl and I have fun setting the dessert on the dinner table for guests. For obvious reasons, I have no pictures.....

OMG, that's too cool for school! I'd be SO terrified all the bowls would fall like dominoes and smash, but it looks fantastic!

Oh wow. That took me a second to realize what I was looking at. That's really cool, but I'd be afraid of them all tumbling down too!

Hmmm, I think I have a fishbowl lying around somewhere. I am going to make a magnolia center piece for the summer table arrangement. Our tree is in bloom and the flowers look really nice when you float them in water, a small fish bowl would be perfect!

tress: yes you could do the soil/gravel method in there. is there just a snail in it now? I guess depending on how big it is....you could put a couple shirmp in it. though you'd have to plant it more heavily.

the plant in a bowl is a cool idea =] and I do have a couple little bowls that would work well. hmmm. haha. I like plants, so this is a great way to do something nice with a fishbowl. I collect vintage milk glass/other vintage footed bowls, and put succulents in them. but they have to be white or creamy colored. that's just my thing.

I could easily see myself looking for fishbowls at garage sales/goodwill and putting african violets, or something else in it, and giving it to someone and starting my own collection too

You would have to be careful with African Violets - they do not like their leaves to get wet. We have three African Violets in a self-watering window box - the water never touches the leaves. They are doing wonderful. Pothos is a good choice - it does well as a houseplant since it is okay in low-light situations, and it doesn't mind being a bit soggy once in a while (not much drainage in fish bowls).

They don't like their leaves getting wet? How on earth do they make it in the wild?

That's a tricky statement. They don't mind getting wet, they really could care less. However,
The water should be room temp
Dechlorinated
and they shouldnt be in direct sunlight when the leaves get wet.< this is a common mistake

The plant should be watered via spout into the soil or a saucer and let the soil wick water.

Oh... Oh dear... I think you mean *couldn't* care less >.>

African Vs are known for being a tough plant to grow, but if you know all the tricks and specifics its easy.
