Using Fishlore - a reminder of our creed and purpose

HI all,
It is with a bit of sadness that I have to post this reminder, because for the most part, this is a wonderful and courteous community. Unfortunately, there seems to be a bit of 'attitude' and a fair amount of rudeness and lack of respect creeping into some of the posts.

Fishlore rules are pretty simple, the 1st rule of Fishlore is non-negotiable:
Discussion and debating is encouraged but rudeness, insulting posts, inflammatory posts or personal attacks will not be tolerated. Above all, be respectful of your fellow members.

For those that need a refresher: FishLore Forum Rules

As stated in the About Fishlore page: About FishLore.com
We have a very simple creed that we stand by:
We RESPECT our fellow members and value their contributions to our wonderful hobby
We RESPECT the fish, plants, corals and inverts that are in our care and provide the best environments possible, and
We try to provide the most accurate and helpful information for our fellow hobbyists

My favourite part of the 'About page', written by Mike, our founder:
"I wanted to create a place where those new to the hobby could come to ask questions and not feel stupid or get ridiculed for asking those questions. I also wanted a place where there was an underlying respect for ALL of the members, not just the senior members. On some of the other boards it seems like the senior members have forgotten that they too were new to this hobby at one point. Some of those senior folks really thought of themselves as experts, I mean really, how could anyone possibly be an expert in this hobby. "

Quite often it's all too easy to forget we were all new, and berate members for 'not knowing what we know', however, I implore all of our members to remember that you were once new too.

I don't want to harp on this, but ultimately, please remember that no-one is forcing you to post on the forum. It's easy to get frustrated, and post the first thought that comes to mind...... please, take the time to read your post before hitting 'post', and if you think it's a bit harsh/rude, then don't post it!

And, honestly, if you can't respect your fellow members, and our rules, then maybe Fishlore isn't the community for you - there's plenty of forums that allow disrespect and flaming, Fishlore is not, and never will be, one of those forums.

Now back to the community.......

Oh, and BTW, if you see posts that need the attention of moderators (i.e. break our rules), DO NOT RETALIATE, report the post, and let the mod's handle it: How Do I: Report SPAM (and inappropriate posts)
Retaliating only makes it more difficult for the mods to do our job

A well said , and appropriate reminder.

Fish Lore is now the only web site that I am active on everyday because of the unyielding policies stated above. There are one or two other sites (photography) that I frequent, but have learned to stay in the rooms for the type of photography that I have been told I excel in. I have grown tired of having to enter into combat in areas that I have not mastered.

Here at Fish Lore I am free to move around all the rooms, and not have to gird my loins, and prepare for battle.

Personally, I am grateful for the way this site is run.

Very well put ryanr.
I love that I can ask questions here and usually feel that I get helpful, respectful answers.
It definitely is a good reminder to others to strive for kindness, and remember that not everyone has the same level of aquarium knowledge.

I haven't see too many issues with aggression or flaming on here too much, seems like everybody I talk to on here is very very nice and helpful!!

Just wanted to say thanks everybody! Don't know where I'd be without Fishlore

This site is very unique. I've never seen moderators actually moderate like you folks do here. It's very refreshing. If there is a negative/rude post, you guys get rid of it before I even get to the thread. I think most members feel the same way I do, we can ask any question and get respectful, friendly answers without worrying about being belittled. Long live Fishlore!

Bump!

bump5.gif

Thanks!

I think it is important to remember that the best we can do is to share out experiences and keeping in mind that what works for me, may not work for you. Take the advice that you have been given by all and select what may be best for YOUR tank and fish. If one suggestion does not work try another. Eventually, the longer you are in the hobby, you will fall into a "groove" or your own routine and that point, you should share your experiences with us all.

Remember, we were all beginners at some point. Please be kind to your fellow members and more importantly to the beginners in the hobby.

Seems it is time to bump this up.

The moderators have been very busy editing rude and disrespectful posts. It's not fun and we get no pleasure from warning members about their behavior.

Please take a moment to review the rules:

Be nice.
Simple as that.

Sadly I think it’s time for this to have another bump up, remember the old adage...if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all & to reiterate Lucy’s last statement.....
Be nice, simple as that
