Used Aquarium Equipment Questions

Right, ok. That makes sense.

Maintenance really depends a lot on your filtration , stocking(both plants and fish), also the parameters of your water source. I always do 50% weekly, and about 80% every 6 months. If you find your nitrates get too high at the end of the week you may want to do more.

Thanks for the advice, Dave125g. I plan to use my Aquaclear110 and the Fx4 Canister that I recently purchased. I don't plan on live plants at this time, and I pretty much just plan to add more of the fish I already have. Current stock is below.

1 Blood parrot, 3 nerite snails, 6 Emerald Green Cories, 7 Eastern Rainbows (sold as Australian at Petsmart), 7 Congo tetras. I might add a hoplo or two in the upgrade. Otherwise just more of the above.

If you can talk that guy down to $125 or so, I say go for the tank. With your stock, a 100 vs a 125 shouldn't matter too much.

Thanks! He said $175 is the absolute best he'll do, though. But it's good to know that the tank should meet my needs pretty well.

Remind me what else he's including besides the tank? Or is it just the tank itself? For $175, if you can get the lids and something else too, that wouldn't be a bad deal.

Yes, it's the tank and glass tops. Maybe a heater, too, but probably not.

I wouldn't worry about the heater - I'd replace it regardless. You don't know how old it is or if he has used it incorrectly. I would never buy a used heater.

$175 isn't terrible, it seems for your area, for a tank and lids. Much cheaper than new still. See if he'll throw in anything extra (driftwood, filter, etc). If he will, it's not a bad deal. You could also ask if he's willing to accept some of your old equipment/tank in trade.

Gotcha, ok thanks. He had filters included in a higher price. To be honest, I don't remember the exact price or equipment he was originally discussing, but I have all the filtration I need at this point, so I negotiated based on what I need. I'll ask about decor, though. Plus, despite this not being brand new, it is fairly new as he says it's less than a year old.

Ok, all, I did it. I agreed to buy the 100 gallon. I've got to travel nearly an hour, and will pick it up Sunday morning. I only got the tank and glass tops, but it still seemed like a decent deal, and I didn't want to lose out on another tank. One step closer to this upgrade!

Yessir! That's the only way to do a setup this size on a budget.

Can't wait for the build.

Thanks! I'll definitely start a build thread. But, so far I've only got the tank and filtration, so it's likely to be awhile still.

Tag me on the build thread. I'd like to fallow along with you.

Sure thing!

So, I need some suggestions. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts, but Dave125g, since you're so close by, I especially want to hear from you. How much should I try to get when I sell my 55? It was brand new in late March, 2016. I'll include the iron stand, and flimsy plastic tops with LED lightning built in, or possibly glass tops with no light.

That depends on how fast you want to get rid of it.

I'd like to get fair market value. Definitely don't want someone to steal it from me, but I'd like to move it when the time is right.

If your giving a tank stand top and lights I would think 250 at least.

Ok, guys. A few questions, first is on heaters. I'm running a 200 watt heater on my 55. How many additional watts will I need in the 100? Secondly, does anyone know where I should post a thread to get opinions on the scape/decor for the 100? I'm thinking that a build thread probably isn't the place to ask for such advice.

I would add another 200 watt or 300 watt heater.

Also there's a thread "show off your fish tank" you can get some inspiration from that. Beautiful tanks there.
On heaters: I use 2 ×300 watt heaters on the 125. A pair of 250's should work.

I have one single 300watt eheim thermo control model I think it is, on my 120. I shopped around and this was the best for quality to price ratio. Will not be beaten unless you pay top dollar. Here is a pic.

Mine will be stocked heavier than your's, but I still like your's! Are those silver dollars? How big are your Blood parrots?

grantm91
  • #198
Yeah 6silver dollars 3 of which I believe to be stunted as I got them 2nd hand last year and a new female juvenile outgrew them 3 within a 3months, and my biggest bp is around 6inch and growing, nice fish they are the bp can be evil toward one another so buy all at once.

Gotcha, how quickly did your Parrots grow? I've got one, but in the year I've had it, it's barely grown at all. My guess is that "he" was 2-3 inches when I got him, and he's still within that same range. He's definitely grown, but just not a lot. I plan on two more in the bigger tank. I hope it goes well as my current guy has proven to be a bully toward other cichlids, while he's been fine to my rainbows and tetras.

I had a 2 inch one and it got from 2 to 4 in a year, the yellow one is the biggest, again he was 2nd hand and was about 5 when I got him in jan he is now got to be touching 6 he got fat quick as he was kept in an unfiltered tank I think the better home gave him a boost lol but yeah slow growers man, feed high protein even twice a day I do sometimes, also a pea day I have every week and they also peck at the veggies I drop in for mr pleco.
