URGENT: Very sick goldfish!

Hello, Fishlore.

I will keep this as short and simple as I can.

I bought a new oranda goldfish about four weeks ago. He's been in qt since then. All was good but then recently things have started going down hill.

First, he got white spots on his wen. I though they were wen growth so I didnt think of it. But it got worse and so I suspected maybe fungus. I didnt want to medicate if I wasn't sure so I just added salt (with the suggestion of other goldfish keepers) and replaced it during water changes.

Then just yesteray, I noticed he got white spots. Ich! Today, he is covered in them. Can I do the hear and salt treatment even with the possible fungus?

Today, I noticed what looked like pop eye. Though I am not sure since I usually see fish from the sides and not from the top (like I am now). But that is strange since I do regular cleanings and water changes.

I don't know what's going on... Maybe he was sick when he came in and its just now showing?

Hes in a 20 gallon by himself and all levels are at 0 since I do regular water changes.

Help? Thank you.

Although goldfish thrive at cooler temperatures that doesn't mean they can't withstand water in the 80-84 F range, which is what you'll need to raise the tank water to so the ich life cycle speeds up and the salt can do its work. Also, where ich has been on a gold fish you'll probably see white patches. These are caused by the ich and easily become patches infected with fungus. As long as the gold fish has adequately aerated water and the other water parameters are 0.0 (no ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) you can safely dose his tank with a commercial fish fungus concoction. It will be a couple of weeks before you gold fish is healthy and disease free and you will most likely need to repeat treatments at least twice. The temperature in the tank also needs to remain in the low 80s during this time.

Good luck.

white patches are ick but not fungus, every fish can adapt temps as I said but have to be slowly.

what your water parameter?

Yes, all levels are at 0.
I'm not home at the moment but as soon as Ill do, Ill upload a picture and do another large water change. I'm going to the lfs today to buy a heater and fungus med for him. His temp right now is at 70 degrees.
I will update later.

Thank you both for the help!

Ich is not a fungus, but heat + salt water and frequent water change is good for most fish maladies.

Maybe you are not changing water enough or are overfeeding, if you get ich. Not sure but I have not seen it in forever back when I was teenager and would always overfeed.

The oranda has a fungus on his wen and has ich... I know ich is a parasite. I tried to see if the salt would make a difference on the fungus but it didnt...
Ill be sure to change the water more often and feed less, too.
Thank you!
