Upgrading Tank Questions - Plz Relpy

HI Guys - I am going to upgrade my betta tank today and put my african dwarf frog and him together again (they were separated before because the frog was sick) My betta is currently in a 3 gal tank and the frog in a 2 gal tank. I am going to upgrade to a 5 or 10 gal tank and buy a filter and more decor. I estimated the prices and found that I could get everything in the 5 gal for about 30$ cheaper then getting a 10 gal setup. My main reson of upgrading is having to clean it less and for a better setup. SO THIS IS MY MAIN QUESTION- how often will I have to clean a 10 or 5 gal tank with only a betta and a african dwarf frog or maybe two?
Sorry if that was really long.

I would not recommend putting a dwarf frog with a betta. Dwarf frogs really do best in a species-only tank for feeding reasons.

HOWEVER, if you are going to do it, do NOT use a 5. I;d go at least 10 gallons. Bettas are very territorial, and you want to make sure that there are plenty of hiding places for the frog and enough space for the betta to not feel "invaded" upon.

Every tank is unique, but generally a weekly water change and cleaning is required. You will need to siphon the gravel/sand, use a turkey baster to get any little things the siphon missed, and replace ~25% of the water once a week.

You will probably still make weekly water changes they will just be a smaller portion of the tank. is a good website for getting an idea of your stock load and how often you should water change. But I would always advise no matter what the stock or quantity to do a small water change weekly. Keeps everything in balance especially in those smaller Tanks where its extra difficult to find that harmony & balance.

Good Luck.

p.s. I would also be careful about what filter you choose with the ADF. Your typical HOB filter can be problematic with frogs getting sucked to the intake, suffering from broken legs. Also from personal experience my ADF were much happier kept in a group of at least 4+

I do 20-25% water change weekly, I think that's the usual for most fish keepers

Hello, I've moved your thread to the cleaning and maintenance section of the forum. Thanks.

The 5 gallon would be too small. I would recommend getting the 10 gallon and dividing it so the betta and frog each have their own space. This would be better for feeding and aggression. You would only need to do partial water changes once a week after the new tank is cycled (or instant cycled by moving over the filter media from your smaller tanks).

If you're buying everything as a kit, some places sell the 10 gallon kit for hardly more than the 5 gallon kit.

Here is a thread with instructions on making your own tank divider for very cheap: https://www.fishlore.com/aquariumfi...ing-a-tank-for-bettas-fun-and-low-cost.46452/
