Upgrading From 37g To 120g Tank

Whats up everyone first post here. I am going to be upgrading my overstocked tank from 37g tall to 120 gallon tall and had a few questions. First a list of my equipment and stock

1 x marineland c360 canister filter

8 x neon tetras
8 x pepper corys
1 x bosemanI rainbow
1 x dwarf gourami
1 x rainbow shark
1 x clown pleco
1 x marble angel fish
6 x danio glofish
3 x appistogrammas
2 x algae eaters(just got these last week wow they grow fast!)
And last but not least
1 x stinkpot musk turtle *max adult size 4" (floating basking ramp with uv light and heater but he spends most of time in water with fish..I researched online if you get them as hatchlings which I did about the size of a penny when purchased ..and raise them with fish they will not eat them..he is almost fully grown now and no missing fish!)

I do 30-40% water changes every 3-4 days a few caves for shark and appistos and have had the tank for 1 year without any issues. I had one german blue ram die but I'm pretty sure it died due to stress as my shark is super aggro with it and it was just hide in the corner all the time. I plan on adding another c360 to the 120 gallon so I have 2 filters going. My question is will I be able to add more fish to new tank without it being over stocked? Mainly a larger school of neon tetras and a school of corys maybe like 20 each. I know the turtle puts a huge bio load when fully grown(about 4") but its 3" now and my water parameters are good. Might also want to add some more rainbows and try with the german blue again and see with the bigger tank the shark will leave him alone. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I will post pictures later on today. Thank you

Welcome to Fishlore!

Unfortunately, you have some stocking issues that won't be fixed by moving the fish to a larger tank. You have some temperature incompatibilities that can lead to health issues for your fish. I would fix your current issues before adding more fish.

If you'd like, we can help you come up with an appropriate stocking plan using some of your old fish as well as some of the new fish you want to add.

Sure. Can you explain the temperature incompatibilities? My water temp is set at 79F

Sure!

79 F is too high for the neons, peppered cories, and danios. Keeping fish at temps outside of their natural range will shorten their lifespans and can make them more susceptible to diseases.

I would choose either cool water or warm water and stock appropriately. We can give you some stocking plans if you'd like!

Schooling fish (rainbows) should be in larger groups, ideally 6+.

Can you attach pic of the algae eaters?

Oh ok did not know that. I will probably start a new thread in aquarium builds when I get tank asking for stocking tips.

Also, yea I was planing on getting a school of rainbows. I just wanted to make sure my bio load was going to be fine with turtle.

Here are some pictures. I couldnt find the other algae eater but when I got these guys a little over a week ago they were smaller than the neon tetras now they are a little bigger. I def need new tank before they reach adult size of 10-12"

The canister might not be powerful enough for your tank. That 360 is rated up to 100gph. You have a 120 gallon tank. You should consider getting another canister or one that does at least like a 250gph filter.

Yes I am aware. In original post I stated I was going to get another c360 filter. I am debating between 2x c360 or 1xfx6 and 1x360

We can discuss your stocking here, if you're interested I wouldn't leave your stock the way it is though.

I also wouldn't add anything else as long as you have the turtle. Just because he hasn't eaten any of your fish yet doesn't mean he won't, and it doesn't mean your fish aren't stressed out by his presence. Adding more fish may upset the balance and cause issues. I really don't recommend keeping turtles with fish.

They're Chinese algae eaters. Not only do they get large, but they get very aggressive and will likely attack your other fish. I'd return them now. You do not need an algae eater. You are the best at preventing and controlling algae.

. . . Did not know that about CAE. Just researched into them and they eat slime coat off fish? Yesterday I noticed my rainbow shark in the corner swimming upright..he never does that. Thought it was an ammonia spike but parameters came back fine. I read someone had the same issue and it was the CAE trying to eat slime coat at night. Returning them as soon as I get home.

Also, with my turtle I watch how my fish act with him and they literally ignore him. Angel fish swims right by him and the turtle even eats the algae waffers along side my corries.

I just ordered a 48"x24"x24" tank with stand with a fluval fx6. I plan on setting it up exactly where my tank is at now(should be tons of fun). Going to run new aquarium with my current c360 filter since it has established bacteria.

As far as stocking goes the only fish I do not want to rehome are my appistos, rainbowshark, and my angelfish. I can give my neon tetras and corries to my cousin who has them as well.

Your current fish may seem to be ignoring the turtle, but that doesn't mean future fish won't be really stressed out by him.
