Upgrading From 37g To 120g Question

I am getting ready to make the move from my 37g to 120 gallon and had a question. The only thing I am moving over is my marineland c360 filter. I am going to be using it together with my newly acquired fluval fx6 for a few months. My question is once the water gets up to temperature. How long do I have to wait to move fish over? Also, will the new filter cause a cycle? My plan to upgrade is as follows:

1. Remove all decorations, gravel, and 60% of water.
2. (Hopefully) try to slide 37g 10' to the left with fish, filter and heater still running.
3. Set up new tank where old one was. New substrate, rocks, new filter, etc.
4. Fill with new water and let heater bring to desired temp.
5. Connect old filter to new tank
(Time?)
6. Transfer fish

How many and what type of fish do you have....you definitely want to get as much of your old water in the new tank as you can along with using some primer...last year I went from a 75 to a 150....got the fx6 like you and didn't use prime because I was stupid....put all the fish in the next day and everything seemed fine...but then 3 days later I had a near lethal ammonia spike...luckily cichlids are brutes and can tolerate a lot or else my carelessness would have cost me....if you use plenty of prime and relocate your old water you should be fine

1 x Adult Discus
2 x appistogramma
10 x rummy nose tetras
12 x corys
3 x bosemanI rainbow
1 x rainbow shark
1 x angel

Side note: I know I am extremely overstocked but I do a 5-10 gallon wc everyday plus more than adequate filtration. Plus checking parameters every week. Been going like this for a few months until my 120 arrived which it has.

Also, from my understanding I do not need old water as bacteria is not in water but filter. I was planning on putting new water and dosing with prime.

your bacteria is mainly in your filter and on objects in the tank. So really it doesn't matter a whole lot about how much water you keep. You should focus more on putting prime in New water and declorinating it. maybe depending on how much filter media is in your filter, maybe you can move some of it to the fluval and help seed it.

There is bacteria floating in the water column...just not nearly as much as in your filter or on your sediment....its nice that you are actually going through with a large upgrade as those fish really need it....ive just always found using existing (not dirty) tank water helps speed up the cycle....but if you use adequate prime you should be good

Get the tank set up with new filter and then swish your old filter sponge around in the new water give it a light squeeze next to your intake too... If you have ceramic media take some and add it to the new filter to get it seeded also. Then add fish. No need to use old water or wait any period of time so long as your water is treated and you seed the new filter in some fashion you're fine. I would recommend seachem stability for a week and checking parameters daily with the discus also.
