Thinking I need to upgrade my 10 gallon filter to a 20g
cause of over stocking..
leave them both in for a few weeks?
just use the new one?
place small filter on the bigger one and let it grow like that for a few days?

You really need to go to a bigger tank, a bigger filter won't buy you really any extra stock on a 10 gallon.

You will probably be more successful with a larger tank. That way the fish are not stressed out due to high ammonia and over crowding.

tried to get a bigger tank earlier
did not work out..
they are in a heated tank, the other heated tanks have fry in them
the others have crawfish and gold fish

A filter well filters the tank. It doesn't add on space. What are you breeding? If you are over stocked a filter won't do any good so just upgrade it.

swordtails
7 of them in a 10..
slightly planted and hiding spots
they all come out to feed so far
ended up with extra swords from the others rotated out birthing. now everyone is together...
I'm just trying to filter out more ammonia

That's pretty much true for a filter made for a 10 gallon tank. Now if you start talking about a 125 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump the picture changes. There's now the total volume of a 180 gallon tank and more surface area for O2 exchange which supports more fish.

A 10 gallon tank is too small for 1 swordtail, no less 7. give them more room and plants before you know it there will be a hundred of them swimming around.

Run both filters for at least a month. If you are having a problem with ammonia only water changes, Prime and a completed cycle will protect your fish from it. More filtration will help though.

Guppies could be a better source of extra live fish for crawfish to chase and eat. If it turns out your crawfish are not catching them well, then you can also kill them first. The crawfish won't mind either way.

They should be able to have babies even in conditions that are not maintained well (eg, outdoor pond container without filter but have plants at least).

I have 1 last prego guppie that I saved from the angelfish and into the fry tank to birth
other then that I do have a stocking of Gambusia.. I spear them on a twistie tie and feed them to the crayfish (blue lobster) time to time.. though they are in a tank with 2 other smaller cray fish (Florida crayfish)heh, although he has not ate his tank mate goldfish... made sure to add a gold fish about same size as him even though he ate my angelfish that was twice his size when I first got him >_<
wanting swordtails cause they are bigger snacks, and new colors to keep
