Upgrade Tank For Betta?

Hello! So here’s the deal. The other night I was doing a water change for my female Betta. Everything was going as normal until she decided to swim right into the siphon and got stuck. I was able to get her out but she seemed pretty traumatized and her fins got really banged up. I cleaned her tank so it was nice and clean and she’s fine now. She has a way to go for healing but she is swimming around and eating like normal.

So I have been feeling absolutely horrible for her. I know I shouldn’t move her for a while because I want to keep her stress as low as possible, but I’ve been thinking about possibly upgrading her tank and giving her a better setup. I’m sure she won’t really notice that much of a difference but I feel like I owe her something. I’ve had the fluval spec v for a while now and I love it, but I would like to go to a 10-20g tank. That way I can have more complex set ups and maybe get some bottom dwellers or small schooling fish.

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for tanks that come with everything like the spec v. I don’t want to buy a filter and light and everything separate, but I will if that’s the best option. Let me know what you guys think!

I am sorry to hear about your betta, they do this very often, it's quite scary!
You can absolutely upgrade her tank if you'd like to, just try to be as careful as possible when handling her.
I think it's great that you are upgrading, it's always fun to set up a new tank.

If you go with a 20 gallon, do the longer tank opposed to the taller one, because a betta needs horizontal swimming space, and if you choose bottom dwellers, they'll appreciate that as well.
PetCo is running their dollar per gallon sale now, so you could get a tank really cheap for your upgrade!
I personally do not recommend kits, except for the fluval tanks, because most kits aren't very good in quality, and you'll end up wanting to change everything in the future. You get to choose anything and everything you like this way.

I recommend sponge filters, or HOB filters for bettas, preferably the sponges, they are the most gentle and won't suck fins.
Let me know what you decide on going with, and keep us posted!

Do a 20 long long and then you could get this stock
You could keep the water temp at 78. Also make sure you get live or silk plants! keep us posted!

I wouldn’t recommend two schools in a 20 gallon, too small IMO.
Plus, cherry barbs get quite large, and are very active fish.
Please stick to one mid/top dwelling fish per tank, unless it’s a nano fish, or if the tank is larger than 30 gallons.

Thanks so much guys!! In terms of my Betta, she’s doing really well!! She’s back to her normal personality and her fins are actually growing back really fast. So I’m really happy there. While she heals I’ve been doing research about a tank upgrade. I found out the fluval spec has a 16 gallon tank now, so that’s an option. But I also like the idea of being able to choose everything for the 20 long. My biggest concern there is that I have all live plants and I have cats, so I need a cover for the tank with a nice light for the plants. How would I go about doing that if I just buy a normal glass 20 gal tank? Thanks again!!

You can buy them on Amazon I believe

I just don’t understand how. The basic glass aquariums don’t come with a top, I thought. So how do I find a top that actually fits? And how do I attach the lights to the top?

I wouldn’t have bottom feeders. My bettas love to eat food off of the bottom so bottom feeders get just a little.

By favorite schooling fish for a 20 would be ember tetras.

A school of 15-20 in a heavily planted 20 long looks gorgeous,

You find a top that fits the dimensions of your tank

I got some fish today for the 20 gallon! With my betta I currently have 6 neon tetras and 6 peppered cories. I also have two nerites in there. I’m a little curious about how much space a 20 gallon actually has for the fish. I’ve never had a tank this large before so let me know if you think I have too much in!

Neons aren't really temp compatible with bettas. I believe corys aren't either.?

Everything I read said they’d be good tank mates. I got them specifically for that reason
