Several days ago I posted about how I couldn't figure out why my fish were dying and several helpful people suggested that it was my playbox sand substrate killing them.

I switched it out for a thin layer of gravel (sorry catfish ) and the few surviving fish I had left seemed more active than before. I restocked my tank and haven't lost anyone yet! Betta sorority keeping is back in business! Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed.

As a note, do not use sakrete brand sand! Everything will look good and then a few months in your fish will start mysteriously dying.

There can be parasites or spore-parasites fungi and bacteria that is bad for fish in play sand. I have used it in the past but no more. Your better off with gravel or sand colored thats meant for fish tanks.
