Update On Angels! Breeding Constantly!

Evening people,

Just doing a bit of an update on my angels!

So, my pair of angels have been spawning pretty much every week. They are on they're 4th spawn together. This is the male's 7th spawn, and the female's 4th. They did fantastic in the main tank. The laid on the filter, and 2 days later, they hatched. The parents did exceptionally well, considering there are lots of other fish and threats in the tank. They moved their newly hatch wrigglers to a val leaf on the other side of the tank, were they stayed and protected their young for another 2 or 3 days before I moved them into their own tank.

However, the brine shrimp eggs did not come in on time, and there are no babies left I'm really upset by this, as they did a fantastic job looking after the babies, protecting them from danger 24/7. If only I ordered the baby's food earlier

I expect them to spawn again soon, as they are cleaning off their spawning rock.

On the brighter side, my juvenile angels are now 10 or 11 weeks, as of being laid as eggs. I've made a deal with my LFS. They are wanting 10, for $2.00 each. This is an 'alright' price, isn't it? They are doing well, and I moved a little more than half the batch into the main tank and they are doing great it there. It's strange, though. Some babies are two, maybe even three times larger than some other of the fry. It's amazing how they all grow at different rates!

Some more good news, I bought a female angelfish three days ago. She is a silver angelfish (I think). She is kind of a metallic silver, with 4 black stripes. She might be a zebra lace, though I'm not certain.... I'll try to post some pics!

Anyways, only 3 days in her new tank, and she's spawned with my golden, pearlscale male angelfish in the main tank!

I feel kind of like a fish genius, because I managed to sex her, before I bought her! The way I sexed her was by getting a close look at her belly. She was plump and the tip of her pappila was external. So, obviously female! I'm proud of myself, lol. She was bit expensive, though. She was $30.00. That's the most I've ever paid for an angelfish. Although, I guess she was worth it. I got a breeding pair out of it! Plus, her colour and pattern is stunning, and her fins are at good length and have no imperfections. She's incredible!

Once the babies reach their wriggler stage (if, that is) I will move them to their own tank with the parents. There, they should be safe.

Anyways, just an update on my angelfish! But, I do have a question, and I would be very appreciative if someone answered this.

Every week my older pair are spawning. It's causing the tank to go chaotic. Constantly, they scare all the other fish to the opposite side of the tank. I added the newer angelfish to the tank (this was a few days ago) and all the angels did was harass the others. Is there anyway I can have all 4 adult angels in the tank, without aggression? Is there anyway to lower aggression by stopping them from spawning?

When they fight, it makes me stressed... The two males will lip lock. Is this bad? I'm not sure whether to permanently separate the angels all together, or to let them squabble for a bit, and let them work things out for themselves. Any suggestions?

Thnx!

You have a few options:

1. Only keep Angelfish of the same sex in the tank
2. Feed lightly - (1 small pinch per 3 adult angelfish) twice per day and no frozen/live food unless as a treat once per week. It will lower the chances the females will have eggs and minimise spawning behaviour.
3. Redecorate your tank with lots of tall wood and plants creating partitions in the tank separating it into compartments.

I wouldnt keep any pairs together no matter how big your tank is as there will be constant battels and maybe even a death so I would pair them off in there own tanks. Or as simon said above put the males with teh males and the females with the females but you still might have the aggression side of things!!!.
When I want may pairs to spawn on a regular basis if feed them 3 times a day with brineshrimp frozen and do 10% water changes every day and once a week on a friday for my pairs they get a treat of bloodworm which they ador lol. This has worked for me and when I wnat to give the pair a rest ither put up a divide in the tnak between the 2 of back off on the feeding and feed them brineshrimp every other day with flakes and tetra prime red granuels.

In my area, frozen blood worms are much cheaper than frozen brine shrimp. Blood worms are $3.40, and brine shrimp are $7.95. So, I feed all my fish frozen blood worms as a primary food, with flakes on the side after every feeding. They get brine shrimp once, maybe twice a week. Though, recently, because of all the juvenile angelfish, I am feeding about 5 blocks of blood worms a day, making me as broke as ever, so I've been considering a part time job.

Anyways, I don't feel comfortable changing they're diet, as I don't really like the idea of processed, unnatural, commercial foods. But that's just my personal opinion.

I don't have a large enough tank for two angels to live in permanently. I have a 15 gallon, but that's it. I guess they could just live there, and spawn freely whenever they want? Just them, no other fish. Just a suggestion.

I have an idea, though I'm not sure if it will work. I was thinking, maybe if I completely separate the angels, each 1 in their own tank, and reintroduce them back into the main tank after 2 weeks of separation. Maybe that way things will settle down?

That idea was just out of the blue...

@Darrell,
The female I bought is very similar to the angelfish in the picture in your signature. Might I ask, what type of angelfish is that?

Thnx

The only problem with bloodworm is it carrys parasites not all but some do and if the fish catch a parasite it will stress the fish out and could cause death that's why my self personally I use brineshrimp a lot and then bloodworm as a treat .
The prices seem to be quiet high ware you are over here in london england its £2.50 for a 24x pack of frozen bloodworm and the same price for brineshrimp so I can understand why you would want to keep you feeding progrmae the same .
I personnaly think the 15 gallon might be a bit small for them the only problem you will have if seprating them and then reintroducing them when they pair again they will start to squable again if I lived nearer and if you had the space I could have given you a couple of my 20 gallon spare tanks .
Funny you should say that about my signature picture that's a female to I lost her to dropsey she was a wondeful mummy angelfish she was a domestic silver zebra angel.
I would love to see some pics of your new angel
