Hey all, Looking for some peoples opinions for a 5 gallon tank. Already have livebearer tanks, so am looking for something else. Can be fairly challenging to breed, something that lays eggs, just want something really good for the small tank. Thanks for the opinions.

My LFS breeds their own with probably 20ish in their 5 gallon breeding tank, although for just a hobbyist, I’d recommend one male and 2-4 females.

Hmm yeah, could i do 2 males and 4 females? Or would i need a bigger ratio, so the males dont fight? Whats the technique for breeding them? Spawning mops?

You could do it, for kilis though it’s less about the ratio and more about the space, the males can be a bit territorial but it should be fine. Live plants and spawning mops are good. They’ll breed on their own and won’t eat the fry and will breed as a colony. They’re small fish though so they’ll need quite a bit of plant cover to make them feel safe enough to breed. Even better than spawning mops are water lettuce floaters which have long roots that they love to spawn on.

Wrestling halfbeaks. It is another livebearer but (if you can find it) totally worth it if you want something unusual.

That sounds great, i have read up that the ph has to be quite low for them, my water out of the tap is 7.0. Is there any way i can buff the water, to get a lower ph, driftwood? I will definately be making it a planted tank, maybe not straight awat but will do it in the future. Once the fry hatch, can i take out the fry and move them into a grow out? Or just leave them? Thanks heaps.

I would just leave them, Kilifish are tiny so I would wait for them to get bigger to move them, at least a few weeks to a month. I use driftwood to lower my PH and it’s quite effective.
