Unintended Betta Breeding

F36369B5-347F-4FF4-B50D-B9F19088B13B.jpeg hello, as the title suggests I unintentionally breed my bettas...
At the beginning of spring I was quite covetous of my mother’s in law gorgeous pond... I don’t have a large property and my patio is covered in blacktop (hate it, but can’t do anything about it). My solution was get a tub and get a miniature lotus... and I added a pump; I mostly wanted the plants (I have a green thumb) but noticed an awful amount of mosquito larvae... and I have a few bettas (started as a sorority and end up as a mixed gender tank, some girls turned up being male, I suppose they are ok since I have not have any fights)
Anyway put 3 bettas in my “new pond “ with a filter, heater and lotus plant...and suddenly I saw...

Well I was able to get the betta parents out off there and now I have plenty of babies... have to say they are awesome at controlling mosquitoes! And I did get my pretty flowers

Betta female

And a red, black with some blue female...
The babies I been catching them and getting them inside I was able to get some pics... probably won’t be winning any prizes but I really didn’t do much except I learned not to put males and females together outside with mosquito larvae ‍♀️

And I’m having an awful time with algae in my tanks!

And there are about 15 babies in this tank

Hey! At least you learned from mistakes. Since they're feeding on mosquito larve, you don't need to do much until they get bigger, then you can sell them!

I think they won’t be pretty enough to sell... will have to wait and see

I have to disagree. From the photos I see they are pretty enough to sell, in my opinion. Maybe not for $15 or anything like that. But they’re just as pretty as any $4-7 betta you’d find at petco or petsmart..

I was just wondering how your babies were doing. Do you still have most of them? I’d love to see pictures.

HI I still have plenty!!! I am in desperate need to fin homes for them... the females are in the sorority 55gal tank... and I have a few males that haven’t turned nasty to each other but it is matter of time!
Got two white females that started black and turn white with iridescent fins and a bit of black,
White female, and white with black male

Probably slow moving water, lots of constant food, warm water because it is on black top

They might not be those crazy-finned specialty breeds but darn if they aren't still gorgeous.

I wanted a lotus plant... and got a big bucket at target.... those that are supposed to hold iced beverages....
Put my lotus, and got lots of mosquitoes
So I had started my sorority tank and some of my “females” decided that they were not such thing... so since there were more less with each other I plop two of them in the lotus pot, for mosquito control... once I saw there were no more mosquitos I just fed them regularly... and added a small pump and added a home made filtration....
And lefted it on the summer months outside, just added a heater at the beginning, took it out mid summer... and suddenly fishies!!!

If it wasn't -8° I would say ship me one.
I’ll keep it for you, once it warms up a bit... I even have heating shipping pads

Not related to the post, but Ann Daniel, I think there is a way for the post office to hold the package inside for you. Just thought it was worth mentioning

Oh yeah you totally should be able to hold it at a post office or post annex if it's sent by USPS. The seller just has to select "hold for pickup" when shipping. If you have two post offices nearby, you'll have to call and see which one holds for your area.
