Types of food for Betta

I've had my Crowntail Betta a couple of weeks and have been feeding him only bloodworms so far. He also eats a little algae now and then.. pretty much if it fits in his mouth he will try to eat it, even if it came out of him already.

So I'm wondering what else to feed him? I'll probably get some Brine Shrimp but what about vegies? I know they're carnivores but can they eat blanched peas and pieces of cucumbers?

I'd really like to avoid the pellets unless I'm going away for the weekend or something, rather have a more natural diet for him. Any suggestions?

Stay away from too much veggie based foods.

Omega One and New Life Spectrum both are great brands, top of the line. If you go Omega One, get the pellets, as flakes tend to cause problems with bettas, as do freeze dried foods.

Brine Shrimp are good, too.

You need to get him on a pellet staple. Blood worms and brine shrimp are treats, a few times a week, not every day.

I also feed my betta shelled peas. Helps to avoid constipation from all the protein foods.

Thanks for the input. I didn't really want to go with pellets (personally, I'm against processed foods because I don't trust what's in it), but if it makes my Betta healthier then I'll consider it like vitamins.

I read somewhere else that HikarI Betta Pellets (or cichlid baby pellets) makes good staple (feed 4-5 pellets at a time), Bloodworms, Krill, Brine or Mysis Shrimp, Beef Heart (not too often), and Peas (Shelled, once in a while). And of course live foods which I doubt I'll be breeding mosquitoes anytime soon.

I've only been using HikarI frozen bloodworms which I thaw out, is this a good brand as well or should I specifically go for Omega One for pellets?

Omega One and New Life Spectrum both use high quality ingredients, just has whole herring. If it wasn't in a small crunchy form, it'd probably even be good for humans to eat. New Life Spectrum is the better of the two brands, but not my much.

Hikari's prepared foods actually aren't very good any more. A few years back, they changed their formula, but upped the price, and now its not really much better then the foods that are making you want to stay away from prepared foods. Their frozen foods are good, though.

For live foods, just squish any unfortunate mosquito that gets in the house and toss it in the tank. Its very fun to watch!

All those frozen foods are perfect as treats You can feed a good pellet food 4-3 days a week, and then give a different treat every other day of the week. He'd love it, and it keeps feeding time fun

Ok this is getting a bit annoying. I went to the pet store today and happened to notice they carry Omega One.. but I couldn't find anything specifically for Bettas... What type am I looking for? Will it have a picture of my betta on it?

You don't really need to find a food specifically for bettas. NLS pellet food is good for all types fish.

Any NLS food is good, as said above. For any other food, a pellet that is higher in protein, and has good, meaty ingredients in it should be fine.

My betta just died of swim bladder, because I made a lot of mistakes with his diet. I think. I agree with most of what is being said. Omega 1 but they do make the special one for bettas.

you find it in petco or petsmart, and never at walmart. the new life spectrum is good, it is a little more expensive but it is worth it. The advise, fast your fish once a week and next day give him a piece of a pea. it will help for constipation and bettas as well as other freshwater fish may suffer. Good luck.
