Dominant males will develop a nuchal hump which is the most easily identifiable feature (Look at max...bump on his head)

Males will develop red trim on their fins while females will have more of a yellow tinting to the fins. This yellow tint can take a while to develop and I've seen many very young sajicas have a very slight yellow tint which can throw many off.

I've also been told by duanes over on MFK that the females "T" bar (dark middle bar running up and down halfway through the fish) will many times run all the way through the dorsal fin where the males T doesn't

Wow. Beautiful fish! I think you've finalized my decision to go with a Sajica over an Electric Blue Acara.

They are a wonderful fish to keep. Lots of personality though probably going to be a little more aggressive than an average eb acara

Wow. They're stunning. Probably the first fish I'll get when I have a big enough tank

haha glad I can be of service JeffK

They've been one of the more rewarding fish I've kept. I'm anxious to see max and his two ladies in the 40b when I get it all ready and moved into the house.

I just read all 13 pages.
I'm not crazy about T-Bars, but I can appreciate them.
The same goes for Plecos...but that Starlight Pleco will make me change my mind...that is a beautiful fish.

Woohoo it works! Max is so handsome, his colors are just beautiful. Wish I could see him in person, I have a feeling photos don’t do him true justice.

yeah...for some reason it will no longer allow me to post something from the pc then come and edit it with my phone to post pics...it gives me an error...so I have to double post

but yes. he's one of the most impressive, if not the most impressive fish I have. He's still small and no where near full size but he's growing well and his colors are just stunning when he's not stressed. If he's stressed he gets really dark but then his blue eyes shine really bright (probably from the contrast). He's really a stunner. I'm going to have to rehome the other 2 males pretty soon to give max some breathing room. HI'm and his 2 ladies will be transferred over to the 40 soon after I move.

It's coming. Should be in by Dec 18th or right around there.

I actually bought my 135 gallon tank and stand this weekend that will be going in it. I'll start a thread for it when it gets going. But I'll probably break down the 75 for a while. I don't need 3 tanks to appropriately house my fish so for a while I'll be down to the 135 and the 40 until my oscura get big enough that they need their own tank.

absolutely.

The plan is to only have the 135 and the 40 up for a while. So I probably will stop posting on the 75 thread for some time.

Right now the plan is

135g
8 juvenile Oscura Heterospila (right now the largest is about 2.5 inches...eventually I'll need to start whittling them down)
2 Gold Severums Apollo and Sunshine (hoping these guys get along with the Hets. Apollo has been with them for a while now but sunshine will be the big ?
1 BN Pleco
2 Hoplo Cats

40g
3 Sajicas (I have 5 right now but going to rehome 2 soon. Of the 3 I'm keeping it will be Max and 1 female. There is a second that i'm 50/50 on whether it's a female or not. Shows some yellow but I'm wondering if it's a subdominant male. The other female is smaller and has brighter yellow)
13 KuhlI Loaches
1 Starlight Pleco

These won't be the long term stockings...right now I'm planning (but it changes almost daily and will probably take me several months to years to get these ready)...

135
2-3 Oscura Heterospila
1 Blood Parrot
5 of some smaller central american cichlid (thinking rainbows or pasiones right now)
2-3 Hoplo Cats
1 Starlight Pleco

75
Apollo and Sunshine
1 Rubberlip Pleco
6-8 Zebra Loaches

40
Max and 1-2 Lady Sajica Cichlids
13 KuhlI Loaches
1 BN Pleco
8 Lemon Tetras

Seems you're not all that into schooling fish, huh? I can't wait to see the new setups!

I get more joy out of the personalities of fish. Schooling fish, while enjoyable, can sometimes detract me from appreciating the other fish. I may end up putting a few sword tails in the 135 but we'll see how it goes.

They're useful as dither fish though. My cichlids are usually much less stressed with dithers, especially the wild caught ones.

agreed. though sunshine has shown to not like dither fish (thus why no dithers in the future 75) and I'll be using the smaller cichlid species/swordtails as semi-dithers.

  • #278
I love swordtails so of course I'm voting for those!
