I tried to catch his lady tonight cleaning up the nest while max guards but as soon as they see me they stop and stare me down

I think it will keep them. Not totally sure though.

We'll see about babies. I'm not really prepared for them. But we'll see
Oooh - this is getting interesting! My t-bar used to dig pits all the time - if I filled it in, he'd just dig it up again - but he didn't have a lady friend, so I guess he just liked playing "house." If she starts cleaning off any flat-type rocks, eggs may be coming very soon! I forget who all resides in the t-bar tank - any plecos in there? If so, they'll probably try to feast on any eggs.

So I looked at him/her really close last night. Definitely has barbels around the lip but I read that some sources say the females have them too. Still too small to see any up on the nose

Mine has had bristles around the lips for a while now, a few months. Now I think I'm seeing some come in on the top of the head. I think o may have a male.

Had to put one of the male tbars in the big tank. Max was asserting his dominance to much on the little guy. But in the meantime I was able to get some good photos of the other 4

Yours looks female to me. I'm thinking mine is male. He got longer bristles in the same area, and now appears to have to have some coming in on top.

Nice. If that's the case I may be able to put this one in with twig my BN. Maybe they would tolerate each other since they are the opposite sex. But then again, not sure I want them to spawn either.

It was my hope to breed my common with my starlight. Looks like that may not happen now.
Twig and your starlight may make some interesting looking babies, if they do spawn.

A mix of both in the same fish would be quite interesting.

That's stunning. I'm pretty jealous of that. The resemblance to a convict cichlid is also pretty striking too....

Got a good pic of Max. I changed the light out on my tank to a led shoplight from home Depot with a smaller k value. The last light grew algae something vicious. We'll see how this one does. But this light has less of a blue hue and I think brings out his coloration write a bit better

Can you post a shot of the light?

Nice. It's very similar to the 4 foot florescent stoplight I got. That was only 12 bucks. I may pic up 2 of those for my 125.

120v. 2997 lumens 4000k. The last light I had was 10000k

  • #388
Yea 4000k is quite low. I use 5000k on my 10 gallon and 6500k on the 125. I hope your plants will adjust ok.

Thanks Lchi87

Yeah this light seems to be even brighter than the last one but lower k value. We'll see which one does better
