Its odd that your nitrates are at zero. With fish, you should have nitrates. I know its been running for 8 months but, are you sure this tank ever cycled?

Hello, I have plants and I use Purigen in the filter. I never have problems with Nitrates or Nitrites only ammonia, but I am always checking with my kit and first change of anything, I vacuum or change water.

The presence of detectable levels of ammonia indicates that your bio filter is not working adequately, either because your tank has not yet cycled, or the filter is not functioning adequately (e.g., too small for fish load, clogged, etc.)

If you're nitrates are especially low, ammonia shouldn't even be an issue. I only bother checking ammonia levels when I'm restarting a cycle. I would check for nitrites again and see what's going on because it sounds very much like the tank lost it's cycle or it didn't kick in. That can be dealt with easy enough by changing out the water but I would certainly look at that again because you really should have nitrates...if it's cycled. I would also bring the temp down a little 80 is kind of high for the long term on your fish. Good luck

I use Purigen too, but again larger water changes remove more toxins and misc we can't see or test. I do 50% weekly water changes even tho my nitrates are around 20ppm, maybe 30ppm. its never been red, Red is Dead.

Thank you, so helpful my friend. Thinking my weekly maintenance is good but not enough water being removed and replaced.
