I see all of these fantastic photos of fantastic aquariums on here and elsewhere then I look at my own tanks. It got me wondering. Are these photos true representations of what your tank normally looks like?

I know sometimes I clean up my tank a bit before I take photos or angle the photos to make the tank look better than it actually is. So that means some of my photos are actually NOT what the tank looks like about 80% of the time.

Do you do the same?

I just snap pictures and take videos. Sometimes I will clean the outside of the glass first.....

Truthfully, I do minimal maintenance at best. I think most people would be utterly shocked at how little I do.

I usually take a front shot, and at worse use a little windex on the outside glass to remove my finger prints. I'm with jaysee I just kinda do the minimums on the tanks.

Lol I don't clean mine up at all. Hence why my pics will probably be all gross. Lol. I try to get good angles but it's hard >.> so now I just try to get halfway decent pics when I use my phone. Truthfully, my tanks look like poo. They're all sitting on school desks. Ad have water marks all over them right now cause I'm too lazy to wipe the glass

I take angled shots in order to reduce glare and reflection.

I clean the algae off the front and sides once a week and before I take pictures. Other than that, I just stick to a weekly maintenance schedule.

I said I just take the pic, but generally the reason I take a pic is because I moved something, thus what you are seeing is not what the tank looked like for the past week.
Other than that, the clean-up-crew in my 20gal does a fantastic job of keeping everything spotless.. but my 10gal. could use a little algae scrubbing.. reminds me, I should do that today.
I'm a little lazy, so if it offers to clean and it fits in my 20gal., in it goes. ;D

I always take my pics without any extra work, if the tank looks like its slipping in its appearance in any way, I have to fix it there and then, otherwise, it would annoy me all day until its fixed up! So I voted for the first one. Which means, I probably spend about 30 mins to 2 hours a day messing around with it, trying to make it look better! :-\

I can't get pics to upload in the first place. but when I do take pics depending what tanks I don't mess with them.

I have to take 50 pics also . I have an old 7.1 mega pixel camera.

I don't mess with my tanks except to top them off or add some plants or a new fish. I do gravel vacs on my 55gal maybe once every couple of weeks, just to clean up the sand because of how stocked the tank is (plus I have a goldfish, an adult male BN pleco and a juvenile BN pleco in there, so there's a lot of undissolved solids on the substrate ). When I take a pic, I just snap a few and then pic the best one. Which reminds me...I need to take some pics.

My photos show how little preparation I do. I take a lot of photos but only because they're always blurry, or a fish gets in the way, or I get jumped on by a small child and it looks like a horrible action shot... I wish I had a pristine tank with great photography. Alas. I have algae and an iPhone. My tanks are as hobo as me.

Mine depend. There are ALWAYS water marks in my pics, people should notice that lol, I do tend to scrub the inside of the tank wall to ensure there is no little algae spots. That's for my smaller 2 tanks. My big tanks never needs any cleaning, always perfect.

I always try to stay on top of my tank maintenance because with having 18 tanks if I get the least little bit behind it can snowballs on me. I do try to polish my glass good before I take pictures so that I don’t have any water spots show up that I didn’t see before hand.

A little trick I learned a while back from a professional fish photographer is to polish the out side glass on the tanks with a good car wax. It not only removes the water spots but it also help prevent them. I just make sure that I go slow and easy when doing it so that I don’t get any in the tank or on my wife’s floor. So if your tank glass has been kept clean on the inside and you wax the outside you get the best picture you can get

Wow, thanks for that tip! I'm definitely trying the car wax. I know I have PLENTY of that, being the car freak that I am...

It's been interesting reading the responses.

Just be sure to only use it on the outside part of the glass and don't get any inside the tank. I don't use it at all on the glass tops either.

my best pictures are taken when it's sunny outside, lets really nice natural light get in the room for the best pics!

I am constantly taking pics of tanks. Mostly the snails. I do so the second I see something cute or funny going on, and that often leaves no time to clean, move stuff around or even wipe the glass. In fact its embarrassing how many water spots cover my tanks at any given time. I am sloppy at water changes lol
