Tropheus - how different is each species?

RandomFishBoi

Considering getting Tropheus. What is your experience with them and/or what do you know about them? More specifically their behavior. Also, how different is each species, and which one do you recommend? I'm especially interested in ones with the yellow band(s).

20 years ago I lost a colony of 30 wild caught Tropheus moorii, my dad and I paid 600€ for within a week due to accidental feeding of bloodworms (we usually prepared small cups with frozen food, that were not see-through, grabbed the wrong one for that tank. After that we changed to see-through cups.). So whatever you do, no live or frozen food. Well, maybe artemia in small amounts. We kept the surviving 3 individuals in a 650 liter Mbuna community, as they have similar feeding habits and the Tropheus lived about 2 years with us, before we rehomed them.

Otherwise I found them only doing well in species tanks. About the Mboko (or Ikola) Yellow Bands I can't say much, never kept them.
