So, just two things about my trip to Petco...
1. I got a new addition, and she is a pretty little iridescent crowntail...I'm not sure if she falls under turquoise/green or some kind of blue, but I will post pictures later so maybe someone else can tell me. ;D
2. Just a short story about the man in line ahead of me at the fish counter. He was buying a pair of crowntails, one male and one female. He asked the Petco employee if a male and female crowntail would still fight if he put them together. Employee asked what tank and the man pointed to the 2.5g glass tank he had placed on the counter. Employee told him that they'd probably fight, yes, and thankfully he also said that it didn't really matter if they were both crowntails or not, they'd probably fight. Employee also said that they might get along better in a larger tank with lots of plants and decorations. Customer asked if they would "make babies" if he put them together, and employee said that they might. He looked like he was leaning toward getting a glass divider to keep them apart, albeit in the 2.5g tank.
By the way, I *almost* went off on both of them when I thought that the man requested that they both be put into the same plastic bag. I bit my tongue and waited until I confirmed that the customer was actually asking that the employee put the plastic bins inside separate plastic bags.
I did talk to the customer though and tell him that they were liable to kill each other before any spawning if one or both of them weren't ready. He asked if I'd ever had my fish "make babies" and I said no, I wasn't in any position to take care of all the spawn. I told him briefly about vertical breeding stripes on the female, bubble nests, and directed him to look up breeding information online. I mentioned "even Youtube" and he was surprised *information is out there on the internet*. He also mentioned that he'd tried numerous times before to make his fish "make babies" but he'd always failed. Surprise, surprise.
Anyway, I just hope I pointed him in the right direction. He seemed so inordinately interested in having bettas breed, but he didn't even know about bubble nests, *which sex* got breeding stripes, or anything. And the mind-boggling thing is that he's apparently tried this before, so he *knows* that bettas will tear each other up. What is he thinking, that his previous purchases were just psychotic flukes?!
Anyway, I'm just venting my frustration...now I am off to acclimate my new girl and set up a new tank for her. I picked up a 5 gallon Eclipse tank off craigslist for a steal -- $15!! And it included gravel, some decor, and a 100 watt heater. The guy may even call me back if he finds more things he wants to get rid of, because he's about to downgrade on space in a new apartment. Once she's quarantined, I'm going to *attempt* to put her in my 29 gallon community tank, but I realize that's risky, so if she doesn't work out in there, I will have the 5 gallon tank on backup.
Edit: okay that story wasn't short at all.
