Trimming Aqueon Glass Lid

I am looking to trim my Aqueon Versa glass lid but I wanted to know if anyone else had experience with cutting theirs? I want to bring it to a professional cutter and they mentioned if it’s tempered that it’s probably not going to work. Here are some details for my tank: TopFin that doesn’t have a bracket for the lid to sit on so I purchased lid clips for the lid to rest on. Since the lid is bracketless, the lid needs to be 28 3/4” wide and the original glass size is 29”. Any help is appreciated!

Yes, it can be done. Is it the best way? No. Will it save you money? Absolutely not.

I just build my own lids by going to Lowe's. The panes are pretty cheap, and they'll it cut free as long as you bought it there. Then I attach knobs or other ways of opening the lid. It's so cheap, a 30" lid costs less than $15 for them to cut in my area.

Another way to do it is sand 1/4" off. Get a few grades of sandpaper, 1 higher than the other to smooth the job of the first. Sandpaper is super cheap. It'd cost you less than $5 and maybe 45 minutes of labor at most.

Hope this helps :)

The only issue with going to Lowe’s is that the glass I have now has the flap in the middle where the 2 pieces fold. Very convenient and it was $25. I’m going to see how much they will charge to cut it and make my mind up from there.

I do not think Lowes will be able to trim just 1/4" off the glass panel.

I know that even the most experienced tradesman will have extreme difficulty cutting 1/4 inch off . 3 inches no problem. 5 inches no problem. Anything less than 1 inch almost impossible.

ikea is a source of glass as well . Sold as shelfs .

Well then I might be returning the Aqueon Lid and starting from scratch then. Thanks for everyone’s input!

Is there a glass shop nearby. We have one that replaces windshields and so forth, but they also do custom flat glass and you can do your own hardware.
