Treating Ich With Heat

Hello Everyone,
I’ve noticed 3-4 specks of ich grains on my Severum today, I’m not sure if it’s ich but I’ll be going on holiday tomorrow and I’m going to play it safe by just treating with heat. I’ve noticed that he’s been vibrating vigorously sometimes, like he’s irritated somehow.

I’ll be gone for 3 weeks, with the fish being fed by an auto feeder. I’m planning to raise the temp to 86 Degrees for 3 week and then I’ll decrease it when I come back.

Only one fish has a clear sign of these grains, the others seem to not have it, at least not visible.

I’m planning to get a 200+ water heater today. What wattage will be appropriate for a 110 Gallon tank?

My tank is currently at 80-82 Degrees, how often should I raise the tempreture?

Thanks in Advance guys

HI there! Itch/Ick can be a nightmare!! Increasing the heat is always the safest way to begin, also doing water changes....Since you will be gone for three weeks I would differently do at least a 25% change before you leave.

If you can put an orange peal in the tank for 2-4 hours that helped with mine as well....I have had great success with simply increasing the heat, adding salt and a couple of orange peals...

HI there,
I’ve already done a 75% water change yesterday since it’s a 110 Gallon. I’ve added aquarium salt and increased the tempreture to 86 Degrees.

Unfortunately, I’m out of the country already so the orange peel thing won’t be able to work.

In addition, I also fed them NLS Thera A pellets which contain garlic to boost their immune system.

Thanks for the response!

Hello,

Sorry to hear that you are dealing or may be dealing with ich. I have had great success with the heat method and without the use of salt. Using salt is old school and is not necessary for freshwater fish.

NLS Thera +A great food! I used it for years.

Remember if 1 fish actually has ich the entire tank is infected and needs to be treated. I would suggest increasing the heat 2 degrees per hour or 2 hours.

Do you have more than 1 heater in the aquarium?

Best wishes for a full speedy recovery and enjoy your Holiday!

Thanks for the response Ken.
I’m treating the entire tank with increased heat, which I bumped up to 86 Degrees.

I only have one heater in the tank, and it’s a 200 watt heater, IMO I think it should do the job.

Good luck. At this point, there's no more advice, just hoping.

I have never heard of using orange peels. Citric acid? It shouldn't affect Ich.

It doesn't treat it just aids in the healing process from the oils that the peels leave off
