Transplanting amazon sword

I have a well established amazon sword plant that I'd like to move to another location and I was wondering if it's as simple as a "pluck and plop" or if I'm going to damage or kill the plant. Anything important I should know about? Thoughts appreciated.

I just moved one from a tank we shut down to another tank, the roots were around 6" long. I cut them back to around 3" but it is not doing so well but I am sure it will recover

I am really curious as to how sensitive the roots are to disturbances. I hope yours recovers quickly. I don't want to cause any more damage if I don't have to.

Mass is right on target.

Just carefully take it out, try your best not to damage the root ball. Bury it in the new spot just the way it was before.

Every plant, whether aquatic or not, could use a little trim of the roots when transplanting. Cut the tips of the roots. The plant will die down a little in its new spot, but will live again. If you use ferts, only use a half dose for at least the first month.

Great! Thanks for the tips guys.

I used ferts to power my plants when they were new, but have since stopped because I've found them to be unnecessary. Would it be beneficial to add a little liquid fert or substrate tablet to give the plant a boost after transplant? Or, should I let the fish poo do it's thing?

If the tank is cycled, then it's a matter of personal preference. I use Leaf Zone with water changes at half dose, but I probably don't needed.

Swords love root tabs as they are heavy root feeders

Got the plant moved (actually I mis-typed, its an Argentine sword). Pretty extensive root system. I gave it a fert tab for good measure. Tank looks much better and the fish are happy!

Glad that you transferred your plant successfully.

Just a side note, your sword may have a reaction to moving to a new area; All plants do.
If you start to see something like decaying leaves or holes in the leaves in a day or so, I wouldn't worry, it's most likely the reaction - give it time (and meet the requirements of the plant) and it should recover and grow even more beautiful

Great, thanks for the heads-up!
