Transfering Tank Help

So I got a 55 gallon and I'm transferring my fish and live plants from my 20 gallon and have got a couple of questions. My 20 gallon crashed hard has had a bacteria bloom for a week ammonia off the charts and white fuzz stuff growing on the walls that my snails have almost taken care of. I don't want these problems in my 55 gallon with the plants can I give them a quick rinse in the tap and move them over or should I declhlornate some water and rinse them off that way? With the fish as long as there the same temps can I just net them over the only difference would be going from a high ammonium tank to a tank with none will that shock them?

I can't imagine that moving fish from bad water to good could have any worse effect than leaving them in the bad water; float em' in a bag like you normally would. Just my $.02

I know people are against using chemical treatment but have you tried doing a water change and using a ammonia lowering aid? Or an ammonia filter pad? I would do that 1st to bring it down so that the shock isn't so severe. Some fish will just keil over if put straight in clean water from a bad water tank. I don't know what fish you have but I'd try to lower it a bit beforehand. That way you don't lose any weaker fish.

DON'T USE THE PADS!!! When they're exhausted (which will happen very quickly) they release the toxins back into the water.

1. Treat with Prime - it'll detoxify the ammonia instantly.
2. Do a series of daily water changes until ammonia isn't detectable any longer.
3. Get Purigen and The Bag; you'll never have ammonia problems again, if you follow the directions for regeneration and don't overfeed.

Just match the temp, ph and you should be fine. Essentially when doing water changes to control tank contaminants, your attempts are to essentially place your fish in clean contaminant free water, so no problems there. With regard to pads leeching back contaminants in water, I wouldn’t worry.

The advice about transferring your fish & acclimating & matching pH & temp is good... But I want to back up.

Just to clarify, how are you planning on cycling your new big tank? Are you transferring all your filter media from your smaller tank? Or are you starting over with a fish in cycle?

I am using the quietflow 50 with all the media from my old tank and have a 75 treated with safe start both on the new

Fish are happy I'm happy

Good plan. I was going to say since the new tank hasn't developed the bacteria on the surfaces, my personal preference is to add in bio bacteria. It seems to help the tank out. But that's just my preference. Some people may disagree and I only recommend the pad along with the water change right before moving the fish. I'm aware that if its to high it will fill up fast but poly fill pads with the color change does work! Rachel O'Leary talks about it in one of her videos.
