One of my bettas (might as well be my mom's!), named Toro, is going to be upgraded from a 2.5g tall cylinder to a 20G long and the process has begun! We plan on extending a shelf outwards and supporting it for the tank. It'll be lightly planted with pool filter sand, a sponge filter, and a heater to provide him the home he really deserves.
We got him at an independent local fish store where he, among other bettas, were held in plastic condiment containers about 1/4 the size of the cups at Petco. They had no room to turn around or do anything. This isn't a fish store like petco/smart where people go with bettas in mind. They tend to go for other fish (barbs, cichlids, etc) so I decided to rescue a pair.
I put them each in their own tank with a tiny hob and heater. Toro's personality began to shine through! He will let people pet him and will beg for food. Whenever he knows someone is watching he'll go up and down the tank, spreading his fins and showing off. He's very hyper, but not aggressive hyper, more of a kid after they get chocolate hyper.
My mom is actually the one who said we should rescue them and I'm so glad she did. When I first started the hobby she was very indifferent about fish. They're cool and all but they aren't that interesting. I have blabbed about fish nonstop for months and she became interested and is now quite the betta freak! She's talking about rescuing another to put in Toro's old tank.
If you've made it this far, congrats on reading this long passage that I could easily submit to Guinness World Records!
Also, here's a picture of his tank so far:
