Torn Fins / Fin Rot ?

Hey everyone! I’m new to fishlore and I’m excited to join this community! I have a few questions about my Betta (Sky) and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I just want to make sure I’m doing things right...

My biggest concern are his fins. *pics are below and I’d really appreciate if you could take a look!* They are jagged and look torn. I’m not sure if it’s fin rot or biting or something else. He’s been like this for a while and I assumed he was just changing (it was after we bought him in October and moved him into a new tank. His colors changed too). My mistake. I recently got him a new tank and it got a little worse, so I decided to start treating it with a BettaFix. I know... so many opinions about this product. I’m on day 5 and he seems fine. However I’m not sure if it’s helping. Maybe a little but not enough. What do you all recommend??

He is in a 2.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter. I do water changes at least once a week and add API StressCoat and aquarium salt into it. I often test the water and all levels are good.

Thanks everyone!

I’m going through the same thing. Change 50% of water daily for 10 days. I’m also adding 2 tsp of aquarium salt. This is only half the recommended amount but I have plants.

Looking at your tank, there doesn't seem to be anything that might hurt his fins except for maybe the castle. So I'm leaning more towards fin rot. For treatment, I would keep his water conditions clean and pristine for the next few weeks and if that doesn't work, I would treat with medications. I recommend Kanaplex, Furan 2, Maracyn 2, or Paraguard. I would do salt as a last option because it irritates the gills and slimecoat which helps build a better slimecoat and treats fin rot, but stresses them out. But that's just my opinion.

It’s ok to disagree. IMO, (and I got this from Gypsy13), salt is fine for short periods of time and much easier on the fish than harsh meds. We all have our own methods and what works for us.

It’s true! Everyone has their opinions and that’s what’s so hard about things like this. Lol. I was told a little bit of salt after water changes is good for their immune system. I always put a little in. I’ll try both methods and see what works!

Thanks for the info!! I’ll look into this. How often do you recommend water changes with pristine? I’m not sure what could’ve caused the fin rot. His water conditions have always been pretty good and I change it weekly. Any ideas?

You don’t need the Pristine product. Just keep the water pristine ( very clean). By the way, I love your tank.

Yeah not the product. Just follow what Goldie recommended in her first post.
