HI So I'm starting a 55 gallon long and I'm putting peacocks, I have an extra aquaclear 50 as for the 2nd filter I'm thinking ac 70 or 110. I don't know much about canister filter but I travel a lot and I live by myself and I hear they might leak and stuff.

Thanks for response

I would just go with the ac 110. Much simpler maintenance.

I prefer a canister for a 50g. I'm not a fan of thr filtration of HOB on bigger tanks.

Canisters are great, you just have to be committed to cleaning them every couple of months.

I have an AquaClear 70 along with another filter on my 55G and it never looks quite clear enough.

My 55 I have Aquaclear 70 and a Eheim 2217 and my fish are not as messy as Peacocks. I also have a Marineland bio wheel thing but it just holds sponges for my pothos to hold onto and a bunch of pothos.

Yea the eheim is the one I'm looking at and a sunsun 404b I think, how long have you had the eheim and any problems with it?

I've only had this Eheim around a year but absolutely zero issues and I for the first several months had it with some very messy fish lol

I've never had a canister leak. They are sealed up very well. If you loose power, they just stop circulating water.

I had a canister disaster years ago but it was WELL used and I had rushed my last cleaning and to this day still think it was my fault lol I don't worry really about them.... The SunSun ones I've heard are hard to snap correctly and I've heard a few disasters from that but I don't buy cheap filtration so I can't comment from personal experience lol. I know some people love the SunSun stuff too so don't anyone think I'm bashing I just am not patient enough to be that careful.

I switched to canisters after using hob for a few years. The primary reason was ease of maintenance and restarting if we had a power outage (which happens way to regularly here). The switch was about 5 years ago and no regrets. I run two on my 90g and also ran them on my 55 gallon and a 12o down to a 46 bowfront.

I Use both canisters and HOB on every aquarium. If one fales there is still one running. Also enables me to get 10x the water column in GPH flow.

Go with Marineland, I have 6 running right now the oldest is over 15 years old. I have never had a leak in any Marineland filters. Wonderful design. All I will ever trust the lives of our fish to.
