Topfin 5 gallon question

SinisterCichlids

Has anyone used the topfin retreat 5 gallon for cichlid or really any fry for that matter. I have one for a betta tank and I think it is good for the price. I am just concerned about them getting sucked up into the filter. I'm looking for a cheap but esthetically pleasing temporary home for them. Thanks!

You could simply place a prefilter sponge over the filter intake tube

get some polyester batting and stuff it into the empty space in front of the filter cartridge, use a stick to get it all the way down and keep filling till you're sure you've blocked the input grill. The built in filter is kinda a pain for shrimp and fry. Cleaning becomes a bigger hassle if you have to stuff batting down to block fry from getting in, the batting just gets everywhere when you attempt to remove the cartridge or the batting itself.

Removing the filter wall and using an HOB with a sponge over the intake tube will be a better option. Or just use a different tank.
