I was wondering if a 300 watt heater would be too big a heater for a 40 gallon breeder. Should I get a 200 watt?
Thanks.

I think it’s overkill but it can’t hurt. I have a Fluval E 300watt in my 40 breeder because it was less expensive than the 200 watt. It just won’t work as hard to get the water to temp. And it’s physically bigger than the 200 but it’s mostly hidden so it doesn’t bother me.

My heater recently failed, or rather the thermostat part of it did.

The water rose 10C above normal to 36C.

My Clown Loaches handled it but I noticed they were agitated and swimming around to try and get away.

This was a 300W in a 110USG / 400litre.

I would worry about a 300W in a 40G you may not have any fish left alive in a situation such as mine.

Thanks for all the responses!
The tank will be in my basement where it's usually about 12-15 degrees celcius year round. I just thought because of the cooler outside temp, I would need extra heating.
