I have a 55 gallon tank with two Penguin 350's in it...

Is this too much?

I have a 60 gallon with 2) Aqueon 50's 1) Aqueon 90 and 1) Fluvol 206. I don't think you can over filter... unless one of the monerators wants to correct me. I am moving 1000 gallons an hour in that tank.

You cannot have too much filtration but you can have too much current. If your fish are being blown around the tank or if they are always hiding in eddies, then you have too much current.

GPH is not the most important aspect of filtration. Volume of biomedia is. That's where HOBs fall woefully short - they hold a miniscule amount of media compared to a canister. Lets take your 1000 gph filtration system - the 206 probably holds as much media as the 3 HOBs combined. You'd be much better off ditching them for another canister.

As for the two 350s on a 55 - it's not too much. 1 wouldn't be enough

I say GPH is not as important when it comes to filtration, yet I always tout the massive filtration systems I run. On my 55 I have an XP2 and an aquatop CF-300 totaling 565 gph. On my 75 I have an XP3 and a CF-400 combining for 720 gph. Either of the filters could sufficiently handle each tank, but I go big for other reasons.

First and most important, is waste collection (most effective with sand). The high gph carries the waste to the filter intakes - it's rare that I ever see waste, even in the 90 with goldfish, plecos and 75 other fish. Another reason that I go big on filtration is so I don't have to do filter maintenance very often. I only need to clean the filters a couple times a year. This is a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

So, the extra filtration I use doesn't make it any safer for the fish - 0 ppm is 0 ppm - but it provides other benefits that I find very valuable because I am lazy and don't want to have to actively clean up fish poop or clean the filters all the time.

I have a 55 gallon with 2 Emperor 400's and 1 Eheim 2217. It's over stocked and over-filtered, but everything in it is just fine.

As was said above unless the currents bothering your fish you can't have too much filtration. Recommended gph is 10 times the tank gallons so the 55 should have 550gph anyway so that's not a lot over.
