I have three female guppies that briefly shared a tank with two males earlier this year. Very recently I noticed fry in the tank. A week later we decided to move the fry to a small 10 gallon tank. At this point, I've been pulling out 8-12 fry per week for the last few weeks. There must be over 30 fry in there now, one to four weeks old.
The first batch was a complete shock since there hadn't been a male in the tank for at least 5 months. I realize now that's not totally unusual. Since the first batch, we did put a young male in the tank but he disappeared after two days. I assume the females were not pleased with his presence; I wish I knew they might retaliate.
I'm curious to see if any of the first batch of fry look similar to my original male guppies. They were magnificent males with very long flowy fins and tail. Sadly those long fins became a target and I didn't pick up on it soon enough. We raised them from a very young age so it was sad.
Anyhow, the tank they're in is moderately planted but pretty soon that small tank isn't going to cut it. So, what do people do with so many fry?
With regards to selling them, I read that they're not desirable until they show their colors...2 to 3 months. I'm not sure that's an option.
I have other tanks but they would become food for my rams, apistos, kribensis. Is that bad?
Any advice would be appreciated.
