Too Agressive

Hi,

I have a turquoise rainbow all by himself, which I now know is not a good idea however I fear I do not have enough room in my 29 gallon for a school of torquoise rainbows. my rainbow now is very aggressive towards a gw killifish I have. Id hate to sell the rainbow because its my favorite fish so I was hoping maybe someone would have some other options. Do different species of rainbows school together? and if so, is there a species of rainbows that my tank would be big enough for that he could school with. And finally, (haha thanks for still reading everyone), would a school calm him down?

A school would help, but as you already know, your tank is not bug enough. Rainbows can get quite large, and like a lot of horizontal swimming space. If you were to upgrade to a 55gallon, you could get a school of them.

He may just kill the little fish in your tank. If you can't upgrade, do what is best for the fish, and return him.

Strangely enough, he isn't bother any other fish in the tank. Just the gw which is almost the same size. unfortunately I'm aware returning the fish may be my only option.

Turquoise rainbows are much too big for a 29. Yes, other species of rainbows will all school together. Yes being kept in a school will calm it down. No, your tank cannot support a school of turquoise rainbows - not even 3. It really can't support the one you have, which adds to it's aggressiveness.

If you were insistent on keeping it, then you could try getting some dwarf neon rainbows, but that would just be cramming more fish into the tank that don't belong, as they will outgrow it too. Also, I had tried this with a boesmani, and it didn't help - the boesmanI was very aggressive towards the dwarf neon rainbows and I had to return it.

The best thing for you to do is return it and get some rainbows that are suitable to the size tank you have. Threadfins, celebes, gertrudes, any of the blue eye rainbows will work.

My large rainbows outgrew the 90, so a 55 would be a temp home as well. 55 would be good for dwarf neon rainbows or machallochI rainbows.

I moved my big GW killI to the 125, but had to take him out because he was trying to breed with the yellow rainbows. Once I get some female GWs in there, I will try again.

Mine outgrew my 90 as well.

I can't imagine stuffing them back in there.
