Titles based on post count

this annoys me..how can fishlore grade people up on the site with there titles by the quantity of posts they put through? I have seen on numerous occasions on the site, seriously uneducated individuals (possibly young children) who are ranked as fish helpers etc, when really all they are doing is posting a load of rubbish all day. not that I'm too concerned about being a "fishlore newbie" because I know, along with many of other users on the forum that us newbies have much more experience and intelligence of fish and how to keep them.
this is just false advice and statements these "moderators and helpers" are giving to people. and people are expected to listen and possibly will try the things that are explained to them.
should definitely be on the quality of the posts and knowledge that you put on.
quality before quantity as they say.

I agree that you can have hundreds of posts that aren't of quality ( say by posting in games or other areas ) but honestly, I don't see a way to control that. It's looked at more of a "seniority" thing than really saying that the person is an "expert" at anything ( which is pretty loosely defined anyway )

You can however use the "reputation" button ( looks like a star on the bottom left of the post ) to either
approve/disapprove posts that will show up under your name ( under the stars with the green bars )

I agree with you but I must ask- why do you assume they are young children? the youngest legally aloud on the site is 14 yrs old. I am only 15 and I have helped many people on the forum (usually much older than me as there are not that many under 16 on the forum). just because someone is un educated doesn't mean she can be young children. I do however agree with when you say there are a lot of rubbish post (like in the game part of the forum) where people are posting so much that there post amount is HUGE. it does kind of annoy me.

I certainly understand Orangedude8's concerns about the labels put on there but, in my humble opinion, like some things in life I am not sure I am willing to take things like these labels so seriously.
I think after being on this site for the last couple months or so I can tell the folks like jwebbe are quite experienced and knowledgeable despite whatever number of posts (large or small) is next to their name.
I guess I would just be more worried about some of those inexperienced folks giving out poor advise....but I think that's what the moderators are here to help.

Agreed. After only being on this site for about a week you learn who is the knowledge people and who is not. Also the reputation button is key and not everyone is using it like they should. If you see great advice being given out give good rep so they will be seen on the forum as knowledgeable people.

The fact is, EVERYONE starts out with the same number regardless of their knowledge or skill.
That's really the only way to track how long a persons been on here, etc

And quite true - the labels are just that. I wouldn't be so concerned about it as much as if you are willing to help ( doesn't mean you have to know the right answers ) but just enjoying the community of people who share the same interests as you and participating in conversations. That's what it is to me

I totally agree, I know 4 members of the site who are indeed very intelligent and trustworthy on the forum. and to a question asked about why I think there young? due to there poor grammar and spelling. and I'm talking very poor not just rather poor. you could say I'm a bit judgemental. and I'm not overly bothered I was just writing this as a point to those knew to the site, not to trust everything you see. and I'm aware of the reputation things and all, but I'm just making the point of the labelling of certain users. no disrespect to you as a 15 year old. I'm 19, and have been breading different species of fish for 4 years now so I'm not going to judge you..would be slightly hipocritical.

I don't judge users based on their number of posts, stars, titles, or reputation; rather, I judge them by the content of their posts, particularly how thoroughly they can convey thoughts and ideas so that others can understand them.

Decent grammar and spelling will go a long way in my world. I really can't stand people whose posts are such an atrocious butchery of English it isn't understandable. If English isn't your first language, it's totally understandable, but if you're from the States... well, I blame the public school system.

I think the issue here is that there is no way to control those titles by knowledge and skills without actually hiring people to evaluate and manage that. The titles are a built in feature of vBulletin. It is simply a title assigned to a post number threshold. I'm one of the guilty ones because I'm a music freak and post all the time in the song association thread. I also usually note that we should here what others have to say when in give advice that I'm not 100 percent on. Also I'm far from extremely young but sure wish I was

Absolutely! Also it helps when a person conveys ALL of the info in one post - saying "need help" in the title doesn't prompt me to want to read it and having very little info in the body of the message doesn't make me want to respond. Good grammar, as well as good information ( everything we need to know as if we were there experiencing the problem ) goes a long way to getting your questions answered and read.

Just kidding. I think it is to do with how obsessed you are with fish. If you post thousands of times on fishlore, you probably are a fishaddict etc.

As Lucy indicated, and as Mike states in the thread, the titles are "Just something fun to do".

In any community, there will always be a diversity of knowledge and experience, and based on those levels, different advice will be given. It is upon the individual members to decide if they wish to accept the advice given, and if they wish to grow their knowledge base. We have a number of members who started with very limited experience and knowledge, but have grown significantly.

As this is an open forum, everyone is free to contribute and all are encouraged to (respectfully) discuss and debate all topics posted. It is the only way we learn.

Whether I'm a Moderator, a Fishlore Newbie, or a Fish Mentor, it is not my "title" that should govern the validity of the advice I give, rather the quality of the advice based on my experience and current knowledge levels and how that advice may pertain to another member's situation. I am more than happy to be corrected, proven wrong or debated - I am not an expert in any field.

Nicely stated!

I should add, that with over thirty five years of experience, I joined this forum as a "lark", not expecting to really learn anything. However, I am happy to report that I have indeed heard and learned things I did not know. For one thing, feeding my mollies peas. I had used zucchinI and romaine lettuce in the past, but they make a huge mess. Peas rock....

This old dog learned a new trick...

Also, one should always remember that it is one's own responsibility to learn and apply knowledge of any sort. Any information gained on any topic can be true or false, useful, or useless. It's up to you to sort through the garbage.

My two cents..

Unfortunately they do
I think you may be thinking that posts in PM and GROUPS don't count

Actually, Pongo is correct. Posts to threads in the Forum Games forum do not add to your post count

Respectfully, I don't believe this is accurate. I absolutely have not posted 400 times outside of the games forums. You guys would all have a pic of me on your dart boards from 400 questions LOL.

Yeah... I've seen my post count go up in the Games subforum... maybe some of the code needs to be tweaked?

Not to derail the original topic here, though it pertains to status/post counts.
Let me clarify:
Any posts that were made to a thread prior to thread being in the Forum Games forum will be in your post count.
Once the thread goes to Forum Games, further posts to the thread do not get added to your post count.

Well, at least that's the theory. Will try and test it and see what happens.

Sorry but It was bugging me so I tested it

Sorry I had to post and run earlier.
Ryan explained it wonderfully.

I have always said it's the quality of posts not quantity.
Any advice given should not be followed blindly regardless of post count or rep points.

I wish!!! I could stand to lose a few 10 thou or so!

I keep asking Mike when does it start to go backwards??

It must have been reset somehow... I've turned it back off so that posts in the games forum do not add to your post count again.

Life is way too short to get bothered by titles. This forum is about learning, and sharing your knowledge and experience. It's also about getting involved in a community that has common interests - in particular fish. Whether you have 1 post or 10,000 posts, if you can help a fish live a good life, that's what matters. Titles are irrelevant. Number of posts are irrelevant (well - except for 50 to get to PM).

I have had the wonderful experience of interacting with several younger (I think they were younger) members, whom I now consider friends, that have amazed me with their sincere and earnest care for their pets, and that they have gone through trial by fire to get their pets back to a healthy state. Then to be able to apply and present that knowledge to others that come to the forum with similar problems and assist them, shows the value of communication and involvement between all members - young and old, newbies and "not so newbies".

That's why I believe while it is important to post quality information, it should not come at the expense of restricting involvement of younger or newbie members to risk chastisement or reprimand. It's tough enough saying what you feel is helpful, without having to second guess if you're going to get beaten up for saying it.

100% completely agree.
